The Baltimore Ravens approached the 2024 NFL Draft with an eye on bolstering their offensive arsenal, particularly at the wide receiver position. Despite having a fourth-round pick in North Carolina’s Devontez Walker, their top target was Florida’s Ricky Pearsall. Baltimore GM Eric DeCosta called Pearsall a “sleeper,” believing he would have been the perfect addition to their offense.
Unfortunately, the San Francisco 49ers snagged him just one pick after the Ravens selected Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins at 30th overall.
Baltimore Ravens Prioritizing Cornerback Over Offensive Weapons
The decision to secure Nate Wiggins, despite their pressing need for a receiver, raises questions about Baltimore’s draft strategy. While cornerback was crucial, the offensive struggle in the AFC Championship Game against Kansas City highlighted their desperate need for reliable offensive weapons.
Their inability to land such firepower in the free agency period, coupled with losing Odell Beckham Jr. to the Miami Dolphins, compounds the problem.
Ricky Pearsall’s Impact Potential
Ricky Pearsall is coming off an impressive 2023 season, delivering 65 receptions for 965 yards and four touchdowns, plus two rushing scores. His versatility would have provided quarterback Lamar Jackson with a reliable and explosive weapon, adding much-needed depth to a receiving corps that’s primarily reliant on Zay Flowers.
With the 10th pick of the 1998 #NFLDraft, the Baltimore Ravens selected CB Duane Starks of the Miami Hurricanes!
In his four year stint in Baltimore, Duane was another success story, hauling in 20 interceptions and this very special pick six!

A Missed Opportunity for Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens’ reluctance to prioritize wide receivers could come back to haunt them, particularly since San Francisco is also a Super Bowl contender. With Pearsall now joining an elite offense on the West Coast, it’s unclear whether Baltimore’s offensive lineup will measure up against stronger defenses.
Reflecting on Past Draft Missteps
Baltimore’s track record in supporting Lamar Jackson with quality wide receivers is concerning. They’ve managed to find success with Marquise Brown (who requested a trade in 2022) and Zay Flowers, but other attempts have largely fallen flat. Their emphasis on tight ends has been commendable, but their offense’s lack of consistent production underscores the importance of a well-rounded receiving group.
The decision to overlook Pearsall, therefore, leaves a gaping hole in the Ravens’ lineup that they may struggle to fill. Whether or not Baltimore ultimately regrets passing on the Florida standout remains to be seen, but fans will certainly keep a keen eye on how Pearsall performs in San Francisco.
