Billy Price, a center who was a first-round pick for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2018, has announced his retirement from the NFL at the age of 29. The decision comes following a serious health scare that has made it unsafe for him to continue playing.
Billy Price’s Health Scare
Price shared the alarming news on social media, revealing the life-threatening experience that led to his decision.
“Everything can change in an instant,” Price wrote. “On April 24th, I underwent emergency pulmonary embolism surgery to remove a saddle clot that was moving into both of my lungs. As a healthy 29-year-old, experiencing an unprovoked pulmonary embolism with no clear medical cause is frightening. I am incredibly grateful to be alive today.”
The Risks of Continuing
Price explained that the ongoing risk posed by his condition and the necessity of taking blood thinners made it impossible for him to safely continue his NFL career.
“Unfortunately, I will be leaving the NFL because the risk of internal bleeding while taking blood thinners poses a significant danger,” he stated.
Reflecting on a Grateful Career
Despite the abrupt end to his career, Price expressed immense gratitude for the opportunities he had in the NFL.
“I am sincerely grateful for the chance to have competed in some of the most electrifying environments across the globe. I am thankful to have trained and played alongside men who will continue to achieve Pro Bowl honors, All-Pro selections, and Hall of Fame inductions.”
College Success and NFL Journey
Price’s football journey began with notable success at Ohio State, where he earned the Rimington Trophy as the top center in college football in 2017. His college achievements led to him being drafted by the Bengals in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

He also had brief tenures with the Las Vegas Raiders, Arizona Cardinals, New Orleans Saints, and Dallas Cowboys.
