The Dallas Cowboys are in a bit of a pickle when it comes to their wide receiver situation. While CeeDee Lamb shines as one of the top receivers in the league, the rest of the receiving corps leaves much to be desired. There’s a noticeable gap in talent and reliability, with Lamb standing out as the lone major threat for opposing defenses.
Decline of Brandin Cooks
Brandin Cooks, once a formidable WR2, has seen better days. His current performance aligns more with that of a WR3, no longer posing a significant threat for 1,000-yard seasons. Though he remains a reliable red-zone target for Dak Prescott, his overall impact has diminished.
Jalen Tolbert showed promise as a depth receiver last season, but he hasn’t proven himself as a consistent, dependable option. The departure of Michael Gallup, without a significant replacement, further exacerbates the issue.
The Cowboys did draft Ryan Flournoy from Southeast Missouri State, but as a sixth-round pick, expectations are understandably tempered.
Laquon Treadwell Not the Solution Dallas Cowboys Need
Evan Reier of Heavy Sports recently suggested Laquon Treadwell as a potential addition to the Cowboys’ receiver room. However, this idea falls flat for several reasons.
Once a highly-touted NFL prospect, Treadwell’s career has been underwhelming. Drafted 23rd overall in 2016 by the Minnesota Vikings, he spent four years in Minnesota but accumulated only 65 receptions for 701 yards and two touchdowns.
Since then, Treadwell has played for four different teams in four seasons, with negligible contributions. His most productive year was 2021 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, a season marked by the team’s dismal 3-14 record.

This past season, Treadwell played five games for the Baltimore Ravens, recording a single reception for 16 yards. It’s unrealistic to expect him to suddenly make a significant impact in the Cowboys’ offense based on such a limited and unimpressive track record.
Why Dallas Cowboys Must Aim Higher
There is always some level of intrigue with a former first-round pick like Treadwell, but the reality is stark. Despite multiple opportunities over eight years, his performance has remained lackluster. While signing Treadwell might come cheap and present minimal risk, the Cowboys should aim higher to truly bolster their wide receiver unit.
The team needs to look beyond bargain-basement solutions and seek out players who can genuinely complement CeeDee Lamb and elevate the offense. The Cowboys’ wide receiver room requires more than just a body; it needs talent and consistency to pose a real threat to defenses.
In conclusion, Laquon Treadwell is not the answer to the Cowboys’ wide receiver woes. It’s time for Dallas to pursue better options and ensure they have the arsenal needed to support Dak Prescott and make a strong playoff push.
