The Green Bay Packers have significantly bolstered their backfield ahead of the 2024 NFL season. Despite securing a strong talent in free agency with Josh Jacobs, the Packers further reinforced their rushing arsenal by drafting USC standout MarShawn Lloyd in the third round. This acquisition, which was widely praised as a savvy pick, provides the Packers with a potent trio consisting of Jacobs, returning rusher AJ Dillon, and now Lloyd.
A Promising Addition to Green Bay Packers’ Backfield
Lloyd, the latest addition to the Packers’ backfield, has already shown flashes of his potential during offseason training activities (OTAs). Offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich has openly expressed his enthusiasm for Lloyd’s skill set, citing the rookie’s speed and vision as standout qualities that distinguish him from the pack.
“I liked his speed. I liked his speed a lot,” Stenavich noted. “He had some good runs in OTAs where you saw his burst. He’s got good vision, so I’m really excited about that out of the backfield.”

Adam Stenavich’s High Expectations and Playing Time
Stenavich is clear in his intention to make full use of Lloyd’s abilities, hinting that the promising rookie could be in line for significant playing time. The offensive coordinator views Lloyd as a dynamic complement to Dillon’s physical style, offering a versatile edge to the Packers’ offensive strategy.
“I would like to get (Lloyd) out there as much as possible,” Stenavich emphasized. “He’s got a skill set that’s a little bit different than AJ’s as far as his speed. He’s not quite the bruiser that (Dillon) is obviously, but he’s got a different type of skill set. So it’ll be nice to get him the ball in space and just see what he can do because I think he’s gonna add a good explosive element to the offense as well.”
The Makings of a Draft Steal
Lloyd enters the NFL following a stellar collegiate career. In 2023, he rushed for 820 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging an impressive 7.1 yards per carry.
After starting at the University of South Carolina, Lloyd found his stride at USC, setting the stage for his NFL journey.
With Aaron Jones’ departure and Jacobs taking over as the lead back, Green Bay’s rushing attack is poised for a refresh. Lloyd’s speed and elusiveness, combined with Dillon’s physicality, could prove to be a dangerous combination. Stenavich’s confidence in Lloyd indicates that the rookie will be an integral part of this backfield overhaul, potentially emerging as one of the most impactful newcomers in the league this season.
