Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Harrison Phillips did not hold back when discussing the void left by Kirk Cousins, the former quarterback who joined the Atlanta Falcons after a lengthy career at Minnesota. Speaking on NFL Total Access, Phillips was candid about the challenges facing the Vikings after Cousins’ departure.
He described Cousins as “a big void in your locker room,” emphasizing how crucial he was to the team’s dynamics over the past six seasons.
“Kirk Cousins as a person, as a leader, as a teammate, that’s a big void in your locker room,” Phillips explained. “One of the most humble guys that I’ve ever been around. Servant leader, just a great motivator. He’s great. To ask one person to fill that void is probably not probable.”
Minnesota Vikings Navigating the Leadership Transition
Phillips, understanding the unique challenges ahead, suggested a collective approach to fill the leadership gap. With the departure of key players like Cousins and edge rusher Danielle Hunter, Phillips called for a team-wide effort to carry the load. “We’re going to all carry that load together, and maybe we can be a better football team for it,” he stated.

“There are already guys that I’ve seen these last few seasons being on this roster—some are captains, some are not captains yet but will be in their careers—and so we’re going to pass that torch off and kind of division of labor.”
His comments underline the importance of building a solid leadership team that can cultivate unity and share responsibilities throughout the roster.
Minnesota Vikings New Faces, New Challenges
The Vikings aim to rebuild with fresh talent, including No. 10 overall draft pick J.J. McCarthy and former Alabama star Dallas Turner. However, Phillips remains realistic about the journey ahead.
He acknowledges McCarthy’s potential but also questions if the young quarterback can immediately command the locker room. “I sometimes wonder if [McCarthy] has it in him to be a leader in a locker room full of alpha males,” Phillips noted.
“Leading his peers in Ann Arbor is one thing, but will he have the gravitas to command 50-something 20 and 30-somethings with wives and kids back home and mortgages to pay?”
McCarthy is set to learn from veteran journeyman Sam Darnold, who is also fighting for his place as an NFL starter. Yet, the transition will require time and patience.
Road Ahead for Minnesota Vikings In Absence Of Kirk Cousins
Phillips’ reflections on the locker room dynamics and Cousins’ absence shed light on Minnesota’s delicate situation. While new leadership will emerge, the process will not be easy. The team must coalesce around a shared vision and adapt to the new voices and strategies taking shape.
Ultimately, how well the Vikings navigate this transition will determine if they can replicate the success of the Cousins era—or potentially achieve even greater heights. The burden lies on their shoulders, and it will take more than talent to conquer the challenges ahead.
