Amidst this, there’s also attention on his younger brother, tight end Connor Heyward, who is fighting to solidify his place on the team.
Connor Heyward finds himself in a crowded tight end room alongside Pat Freiermuth, Darnell Washington, MyCole Pruitt, and Rodney Williams. With new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith traditionally keeping only four tight ends on the 53-man roster, competition is fierce. Could Heyward be the odd man out?
Embracing the ‘Football Player’ Mentality
Despite the uncertainty, Connor Heyward is determined to make his mark by embracing a versatile “football player” mentality. “I do my Indy with the tight ends, but I always look at myself as a football player,” Heyward stated. “I’m just gonna do whatever the coaches tell me to do. … The more, the merrier.”
During his collegiate career at Michigan State, Heyward played a hybrid role, a versatility he has carried into his professional career. Over the past two years with the Steelers, he has recorded 35 catches for 318 yards and one touchdown, in addition to 27 rushing yards on three attempts.
Connor Heyward’s Special Teams and Offensive Aspirations
While Connor Heyward has primarily contributed on special teams, he acknowledges the unique thrill of contributing on offense. “It’s hard to get hype for the game when you’re not playing as much offense or defense because growing up, that’s part of the game,” Heyward remarked. “Special teams is fun, but you want to be out there for offense and defense.”
With Arthur Smith’s offensive scheme utilizing the tight end position more than former coordinator Matt Canada’s system, Heyward sees an opportunity. “Definitely excited seeing the tight end snap count go up, and all the personnel is extremely cool, but with that comes a lot of responsibility,” he said.
Looking Ahead to the 2024 Season
Heyward’s primary focus now is carving out a role in Pittsburgh’s offense. If he can achieve this, he believes the team could surprise many in the upcoming season. “We’re very versatile in our room alone,” Heyward concluded. “I think this year, we’re gonna be able to untap a lot of potential.”
