In a twist that could add a new layer of intrigue to the AFC North rivalry, the Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly considering a strategic move to bolster their defensive lineup by trading for Cincinnati Bengals’ safety Dax Hill. According to NFL Analysis Network’s Noah Strackbein, the Steelers are eyeing Hill to fill a critical gap in their secondary, particularly at the slot cornerback position.
” Dax Hill provides that [slot cornerback] with plenty of upside and likely wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg due to his decreased role in Cincinnati,” Strackbein stated.
This potential trade emerges amidst changes in the Bengals’ roster dynamics, especially after they acquire safeties Geno Stone and Vonn Bell, which seemingly puts Hill’s position on the line.
Dax Hill’s Performance: A Mixed Bag
Despite having a statistically impressive season in 2023 with 110 tackles, 1.5 sacks, a couple of interceptions, and 11 passes defended, Hill’s role with the Bengals appears to be diminishing. Originally selected 31st overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, Hill’s production has not entirely met the Bengals’ expectations, leading to speculation about his future with the team.

The Steelers, on the other hand, find themselves in a favorable position to negotiate, having acquired an extra third-round draft pick from the Philadelphia Eagles. This draft capital could prove essential as Pittsburgh contemplates offering a third-round pick, or possibly a Day 3 selection, for Hill.
A Trade Between Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals
Trading within the division always comes with its complexities. “But would Cincy want to help out Pittsburgh?” Strackbein muses. The Bengals’ decision would hinge on what the Steelers offer in return and whether the trade appears mutually beneficial on paper.
Such a trade would not only provide Hill with a fresh start but also potentially strengthen the Steelers’ secondary, a move that could shift the power dynamics within the AFC North. However, the Bengals will likely weigh their options carefully, as aiding a direct rival like Pittsburgh could come with repercussions unless the compensation tilts significantly in their favor.
This proposed trade scenario underscores a strategic attempt by the Steelers to enhance their defense while navigating the delicate intricacies of intra-divisional negotiations. As both teams evaluate their rosters and prospects, this potential trade could be a key storyline to watch in the NFL’s off-season developments.
