In a pivotal offseason move, the Chicago Bears decided to part ways with quarterback Justin Fields, trading him to the Pittsburgh Steelers. This decision wasn’t unexpected, given the Bears had their eyes set on drafting Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick, a generational quarterback talent.
Before finalizing the deal, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus and general manager Ryan Poles made sure to express their gratitude to Fields for his contributions to the team and his leadership qualities.
“We thanked him for his leadership, for the work ethic and just the man that he is, how he’s always been a wonderful guy,” Eberflus explained, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.
“I just told him, ‘Hey, I really enjoyed our relationship together the last couple of years.’ I said, ‘That certainly doesn’t end here.’ The relationship that he and I built over the first couple of years is special, and no one can ever take that away from us.”
Mixed Sentiments Surrounding the Chicago Bears’ Move
Despite Fields’ popularity within the Bears‘ organization, the franchise remained committed to securing Williams. There had even been whispers of some front-office members lobbying to retain Fields, which would have involved trading the No. 1 pick. But Chicago remained firmly focused on Williams from the start.
Ultimately, Fields left the team on amicable terms. He understood why the Bears were ready to move on and now has a chance to establish himself with the Steelers. If things don’t pan out with Russell Wilson in Pittsburgh, Fields could be a starter as soon as the 2024 season.
Came across this clip of Justin Fields vs Clemson in the 2021 CFP semi-final. The accuracy and zip on this throw is remarkable. He hasn’t done this consistently in the NFL but if the Steelers can get him to play competently from the pocket they will have their next franchise QB. pic.twitter.com/JHBUL8xE1X

Justin Fields’ Track Record and Future Potential
Justin Fields was selected with the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft after a standout career at Ohio State. Although he faced challenges during his time with the Bears, he showcased promising talent, throwing 40 touchdown passes and 30 interceptions while compiling 2,220 rushing yards across 40 games. Despite a 10-28 record as a starter, his dual-threat capabilities give him a solid foundation for success.
The Steelers are hoping he can fully harness that potential and bring a dynamic presence to their offense. Only time will tell if Fields can maximize his skill set in a new environment.
