Trey Lance trade rumors are circulating as reports indicate that the San Francisco 49ers are open to trading him. The team’s decision to start Brock Purdy this season suggests that Lance may not have a future in San Francisco, despite the team trading up to select him with two first-round picks and a swap.
Other reporters have also suggested that the 49ers are looking to move on from Trey Lance, who has been somewhat of a mixed bag so far.
It appears that the San Francisco 49ers are fully committed to Brock Purdy as their starting quarterback, with Sam Darnold serving as the backup. Purdy is expected to make a full recovery from his injury by training camp and should be available to play in the preseason, barring any setbacks in his rehabilitation. So, a Trey Lance trade is very much possible.

It looks like the 49ers were actually the ones making the first move by reaching out to other teams to check if they were interested in a Trey Lance Trade Deal. Ian Rapoport said that it wasn’t a case of other teams calling the 49ers, but rather the 49ers starting the conversation.
Several teams that are in need of a quarterback could look for a Trey Lance trade with a late second or third-round draft pick.
Despite his unusual career trajectory so far, Lance is still considered to have plenty of talent and potential.
If a Trey Lance trade were to happen, it would be worth noting that he had a semi-redshirt season in his first year and only played a few games. When he finally got to play in his second year, his performance was not particularly impressive during a rainy game at Soldier Field against the Bears. Furthermore, he suffered an injury in Week 2 of that season and was forced to sit out for the remainder of the year.
From the little we’ve seen of Trey Lance so far, it’s clear that he does have that explosive playmaking ability that scouts were raving about when he came out of college. However, he hasn’t been consistently performing at that level yet. It’s important to keep in mind that this is based on a very small sample size, though.
Ultimately, the quarterback position is not going to be a strong suit for the San Francisco 49ers. While they may have one of the best rosters in the NFC, the quarterback position will likely require a boost from the team’s playmakers such as Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey.
In the event of a Trey Lance trade, Coach Kyle Shanahan would once again have to work his magic to ensure the success of the quarterback position. However, with a solid offensive line and a talented group of playmakers, any quarterback with NFL talent should have the opportunity to thrive in the 49ers’ system.
