The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in desperate need of a wide receiver after trading Diontae Johnson, their previous standout, to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for cornerback Donte Jackson and draft capital. Despite selecting Roman Wilson out of Michigan in the third round of this year’s draft, the rookie is unlikely to fill the void left by Johnson’s departure.
Reports have surfaced linking San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to Pittsburgh. Aiyuk himself fueled the speculation with a tweet directed at Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, sparking hopes of a potential blockbuster deal.
Brandon Aiyuk Trade Fades as Extension Takes Precedence
Despite trade rumors swirling, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that the 49ers have shifted focus away from dealing Brandon Aiyuk, aiming instead to sign him to a long-term contract extension. Interestingly, this decision follows San Francisco’s drafting of Florida receiver Ricky Pearsall in the first round, which seemed to signal Aiyuk’s potential departure.
The Steelers were reportedly hesitant to meet San Francisco’s high asking price, for a first-round pick, making the acquisition a challenging proposition. Pittsburgh Steelers prioritized strengthening their offensive line by selecting offensive tackle Troy Fautanu and waited until the third round to choose Wilson. With Aiyuk now likely staying put in San Francisco, the Steelers’ window for landing him appears firmly shut.
As an unbiased Steelers fan, Brandon Aiyuk no longer has that “It Factor” in him.
The 49ers should trade Aiyuk to the Steelers (in exchange for a 2025 3rd round pick) in order to make way for Ricky Pearsall to be their new WR1.

Eyeing Other Targets, Courtland Sutton a Viable Option?
With Brandon Aiyuk seemingly off the table, Pittsburgh Steelers could turn its attention to Denver’s Courtland Sutton, who has existing chemistry with quarterback Russell Wilson from their time together with the Broncos. Sutton, known for his strong outside presence, would complement George Pickens well and potentially fill the void at wide receiver. Denver has expressed a willingness to deal with Sutton, provided the offer is right.
Free Agency, Zay Jones Heads to Dallas Cowboys
Meanwhile, another notable name, free-agent wide receiver Zay Jones, is narrowing down his next destination. Per Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, Jones will visit the Dallas Cowboys after already meeting with the Titans and Cardinals. Although not on the same level as Aiyuk or Sutton, Jones, a former second-round pick, has proven to be a reliable target.
Pittsburgh Steelers Fans Growing Impatient
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ reluctance to aggressively pursue a high-profile receiver has frustrated their loyal fanbase. Every potential target slipping off the board only adds to the anxiety, leaving Pittsburgh with limited options. The organization must clarify its strategy at the position to restore faith and ensure quarterback Kenny Pickett has reliable weapons at his disposal next season.
