Childhood & Family
Bryson Lashun Potts, also known as NLE Choppa, was born on November 1, 2002, in Memphis, Tennessee. Growing up in the Parkway Village neighborhood of southeast Memphis, he was the child of a Jamaican mother and an African-American father.
Potts attended Cordova High School, where he was a member of the basketball team. It was during his time in school that he discovered his talent for freestyling, often practicing with his friends. As he pursued a career in rap, his mother, Angela, became his manager.
NLE Choppa’s Music Career
NLE Choppa’s musical journey was kickstarted by his mother, Angela Potts, who not only provided him with support but also took on the role of his manager. In March 2018, he debuted his first track, titled “No Love Anthem” under the moniker YNR Choppa.
In addition to his rap skills, Choppa gained recognition for his impressive dance abilities, further elevating his popularity worldwide.
This was followed by the release of his breakthrough track, ‘Shotta Flow’, which reached 10 million views in just one month. Continuing his success, Choppa dropped a follow-up song, ‘Shotta Flow 2’, which garnered 20 million views within two months of its release in the same year.
He made his debut in 2019 with the release of his EP “Cottonwood” which included a collaboration with Meek Mill. The following year, he released his first full-length album “Top Shotta”.
In August 2020, it was announced that he would be working on his 6th installment of “Shotta Flow” with Lil Wayne and also recording “Walk Em Down 2” featuring Lil Durk.
In February 2021, NLE Choppa hinted at the release of “Shotta Flow 6” and “Walk Em Down 2” featuring Lil Durk in a tweet. The latter track is now featured on his fifth mixtape, Me vs. Me, which was dropped on January 28, 2022.
The album has a total of 16 songs and features guest appearances by Young Thug, Polo G, G Herbo, and Moneybagg Yo. On January 28, 2022, the music video for “Shotta Flow 6” was released. The song is the seventh track from Me Vs. Me, and the sixth addition to the “Shotta Flow” series.
In November of the same year, he was a featured artist on Lambo40e’s track “Self Esteem”. The highly anticipated single “Shotta Flow 7″ was dropped in December 2023.”
In April 2023, the rapper dropped his second studio album titled “Cottonwood 2.” The album, which included collaborations with Lil Wayne, Kevin Gates, Polo G, Rick Ross, and more, made its debut at number 21 on the Billboard 200 chart. The lead single, “Slut Me Out,” also reached number four on the Hot Rap Songs chart.
Personal Life
In 2020, NLE Choppa became a father to a daughter. Nearly two years following, his partner Marissa Da’Nae experienced a miscarriage of their son.
NLE Choppa has also faced legal issues, including a March 2021 arrest for burglary, weapon, and drug offenses, and a May incident where he was involved in a physical altercation in Santa Monica, California.
