British musician Oli Sykes gained recognition as the frontman and main writer of the rock group Bring Me the Horizon. In addition to co-founding the clothing brand Drop Dead Clothing, he also authored a graphic novel.
Early Life
Oliver Scott Sykes was born on 20 November 1986 in Ashford, Kent, England. He relocated to Australia with his parents, Ian and Carol Sykes, when he was a baby. They lived in both Adelaide and Perth for approximately six years before returning to the UK.
At the age of eight, Sykes and his family settled in Stocksbridge, a town in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. During his teenage years, he studied at Stocksbridge High School and later attended Barnsley College.
Oli Sykes Music Career
At the start of the new millennium, he started creating compilation CDs and short songs using the alias Quakebeat, as a student. He also performed in a faux hip-hop group called “Womb 2 Da Tomb” alongside his brother Tom Sykes and Matt Nicholls, a fellow member of Bring Me the Horizon.
Additionally, he was the drummer and vocalist for the metal band “Purple Curto” under the stage name “Olisaurus”, which he would later adopt for his solo projects.
In 2004, Oli Sykes established the band Bring Me the Horizon. They first put out their EP This Is What the Edge of Your Seat Was Made For in 2004, followed by their debut album Count Your Blessings in 2006.
Their second album, Suicide Season, was released on September 29, 2008, and their third album, There Is a Hell Believe Me I’ve Seen It. There Is a Heaven Let’s Keep It a Secret., was released on October 4, 2010.
On April 1, 2013, the band debuted their fourth studio album Sempiternal, which included new members Jordan Fish and Sykes on rhythm guitar.
That’s the Spirit, their fifth studio album, was released on September 11, 2015, followed by Amo on January 25, 2019. They continued their streak of commercial releases with Music to Listen To… on December 27, 2019, and Post Human: Survival Horror on October 30, 2020.
Personal Life
On July 12, 2015, Oli Sykes tied the knot with tattoo artist and model Hannah Pixie Snowdon in Tuscany, Italy. A year later, in 2016, Sykes revealed that he and Snowdon had parted ways. In May 2019, Sykes claimed that Snowdon’s cheating was the reason for their breakup and he now refers to her as his “ex-wife”.
Snowdon has also admitted to being unfaithful but has accused Sykes of both abuse and infidelity. The band’s song “Medicine”, released in 2019, was inspired by the couple’s tumultuous relationship.
In 2016, former wife Hannah Pixie Snowdon accused Oli Sykes of domestic violence through a post on Instagram. She claimed that Sykes had physically assaulted her by slapping and spitting on her. Additionally, Snowdon stated that she was not the only victim of this repeated behavior.
