One Piece Episode 1071 has finally dropped its much-awaited transformation of Luffy, and the internet was claimed to have crashed while broadcasting the latest episode of One Piece.
Fans had to wait a year for the manga pages to come alive on their screens. Was the wait, however, worthwhile? Fans are not pleased with how Luffy’s Gear 5 animation was handled. Here’s why:
Been a One Piece fan, but I'm not a blind fanboy. Toei royally fucked up that Gear 5 reveal. Hiyori's part caused terrible pacing. They reused Luffy's animations three times! And oversold the looney toons where I could barely tell what was happening with bad animation choices. pic.twitter.com/FzPq8e4wIL

A fan pointed out everything that was wrong with One Piece Episode 1071.
u/KimeriX says:
The storyboarding was all over the place, camera, movement, positions and timings were pretty much off, especially when luffy redirects the Boro Breath. You have no way to appreciate on a first look how luffy’s eyes pop out. It’s there for like 2 frames which is abysmal and the pulling the ground up is utter chaos.
It would have been way simpler and IMO more effective to:
- Focus more on the expression and allow the viewer to acknowledge it (just like in western animation)
- Follow the arms as they get up and then inflate.
- Then he prepares for grabbing the ground with a powerful grab.
- He prepares himself with all his power and jumps.
- The soil is not yet up and he’s floating with his arms inflated and still grabbing the ground.
- He gives the last pull and the ground gets lifted.
- Boro breath arrives and luffy tries to deflect it.
- Kaido gets hit and the scene continues as normal.
The others are bothered by how chaotic the entire situation had been, so much so that they would not have understood what was going on if they hadn’t read the manga.
“The scene when luffy defends himself from blast breath with the ground…the only reason I understood that scene is because I’ve read the manga otherwise that was just incomprehensible”
