About Oppenheimer
The ambitious film endeavours to chronicle the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, who played a crucial role in the development of nuclear weapons, and is based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus. The atomic weapons changed war forever, but the man who created them realized the damage they could do and wanted to correct the wrong.
The movie was released in theaters on July 21st and had a mega opening weekend at the box office, surging past $80 million.
Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr. and Florence Pugh are just a few of the large cast members who were brought together for the film.
Is Oppenheimer On Netflix In The US?
Oops! There is some bad news about this movie. It isn’t going to come to Netflix. At least, not at first. This is a Universal Pictures movie, so the first streaming home is Peacock. Christopher Nolan made the decision to go from Warner Bros. and collaborate with Universal for Oppenheimer. As a result of Universal distributing the movie, Peacock, their flagship on-demand streaming service, will be the first to offer it.
The second streaming home is likely Prime Video. Back in 2021, Universal and Prime Video struck a deal that would give the streamer exclusive rights to its upcoming live-action films. Prime Video streams Universal’s films during the middle ten-month period of the 18-month pay-one window.
This means months 5-14, the first four (and last four) months the film will be on Peacock. The current estimate is that it’ll stream on Peacock at some point in November or December 2023 and then move to Prime in the Spring of 2024.
In case you are wondering, what a pay-one window is? The pay-one window is the time when a film streams directly after playing in theatres.
After Nolan negotiated terms with Universal before creating Oppenheimer, they agreed to a theatrical release period spanning from 90 to 120 days and a 20% share of the film’s initial earnings.
The exclusive window in theatres will most certainly reach the 120-day mark given the enormous box gross performance. Therefore, November 18 is the earliest that Oppenheimer might be available for streaming on Peacock.
The movie won’t be on Netflix in the US anytime soon. In fact, it’s not going to be until at least 2027. It comes via a second window deal Netflix struck with Universal Pictures in July 2021. As per the agreement:
“As part of the deal, Netflix will also licence rights to the full Animated and Live Action slate from UFEG about 4 years after release as well as rights to select titles from Universal’s vast movie library.”
Will Oppenheimer Be On Netflix In Other Countries?
Windowing of material is more difficult to monitor abroad than it is in the US. One of the few Netflix nations where new Universal films appear to arrive at or around the first window is South Korea. If so, they’ll probably start streaming Oppenheimer on Netflix in late 2023 or, more likely, 2024.
For nations like the UK, South Africa, and India (along with other Asian regions). There is presently a two-year wait for new Universal films. Accordingly, it should show up in or around 2025. The wait time will be substantially longer for all other nations.
