The Unexpected Turn in Gran Turismo’s Filming
Neill Blomkamp, the director of the much-anticipated film Gran Turismo, recently shed light on an unexpected event during the movie’s filming. While the film primarily revolves around the real-life journey of professional racer Jann Mardenborough, a surprising revelation about a deleted post-credits scene involving Orlando Bloom has caught the attention of fans.
Orlando Bloom’s Drive That Never Made It to the Screen
In a candid conversation with MotorTrend, Blomkamp delved into the details of a scene that was initially planned but never made the final cut. The scene was set to feature Orlando Bloom’s character, Danny Moore, behind the wheel, a departure from the rest of the film where Danny, a Nissan marketing executive, remains off the track.
Blomkamp shared, “…the only car that got damaged on set was when Orlando Bloom crashed one of the GT-R’s.” He further explained, “Orlando really wanted a scene in the film where he was driving because his character doesn’t drive in the movie. So we contemplated a scene at the end of the film almost as a post-credit scene for fun.” However, during a test lap with an instructor, Bloom lost control, resulting in a minor crash. Blomkamp added, “It wasn’t the end of the world, and it was the only crash that we had. I think [Bloom] is actually a pretty good driver. It was just circumstances.”
The Essence of Gran Turismo and Mardenborough’s Journey
Gran Turismo stands out in the realm of video game adaptations. Instead of a fictional narrative, it offers a biographical account of racer Jann Mardenborough’s rise to fame, starting from his victory in a Gran Turismo video game tournament sponsored by Nissan. The film meticulously captures the essence of Mardenborough’s time at the GT Academy and the subsequent races that shaped his professional career.
Orlando Bloom’s character, Danny, plays a pivotal role in the narrative, highlighting the support and opportunities Nissan provided to Mardenborough. While the inclusion of Bloom’s driving scene might have added a fun element to the movie, its omission ensures that the spotlight remains firmly on Jann’s achievements.
Concluding Thoughts
Gran Turismo is a testament to the power of determination, skill, and the right opportunities. While the deleted post-credits scene with Orlando Bloom would have been an entertaining addition, the film’s core remains the inspiring journey of Jann Mardenborough. Through intense racing sequences and poignant moments, Gran Turismo beautifully chronicles the story of an underdog who defied the odds to make his mark in the racing world.
