Pierrot Studio is officially transforming into a new era with the new brand, Pierrot Films. The new brand will focus on producing content aimed at adults, including works based on manga and original works. Pierrot Studio has a long-standing history of creating anime that we are all familiar with from childhood, such as action-packed anime like Naruto and comedies like Osomatsu-San. In an exclusive interview with Men’s Non-No, Yoshihiko Tominaga, one of the talented producers of Pierrot Studio, currently working on Bleach: TYBW Cour 2, shared the future goals of the studio, with Thousand Years Of Blood War set to lead the charge.
Pierrot Studios Unveils Pierrot Films: Aiming to Be a Frontrunner in Anime Production
Pierrot Studio will mark its 45th Anniversary soon, and to celebrate the occasion, they have announced the launch of a new brand called “Pierrot Films.” This brand is exclusively targeting the audience of popular anime series like Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer. The production house will lead with Bleach: TYBW Cour 3 and focus on producing even better quality anime than Pierrot Studio is already known for. This change in direction is expected to bring a new animation style to the table.
“In light of the current trends, I believe the time has come to reconsider the state and structure of production companies. At Pierrot, we continue to value the production of long-term series, while also maintaining our strength in producing high-quality works in a short period of time. I think we should do that, and I want to focus on branding the company.”
Yoshihiko Tominaga has been associated with Pierrot Studio for more than 13 years. He is known for his work on popular anime series such as Urusei Yatsura, Magical Angel Creamy Mami, NARUTO, BLEACH, and Osomatsu-san. He found unexpected success with the comedy series “Osomatsu-san,” posing a challenge for him as Pierrot’s previous works were more serious. The popularity of “Osomatsu-san” proved Pierrot’s versatility in creating a variety of genres.
“When I worked on “Osomatsu-san,” which began in 2015 as Fujio Akatsuka’s 80th anniversary work, and witnessed the social phenomenon of the series becoming a huge hit, I honestly couldn’t believe it was my job.”
The anime community has rapidly evolved in recent years, with changing and trending anime styles. However, we cannot ignore the significant contribution made by Pierrot Studios to the anime community. According to Tominaga, the studio is known for producing long-term series. He admitted that Pierrot Studio has been struggling to create works on par with other popular animes like Jujutsu Kaisen or Demon Slayer due to the short period they have to produce these weekly anime episodes.
“We are not good at creating high-quality works all at once in a short period of time, such as Jujutsu Kaisen. Nowadays, it is becoming difficult to continue producing works of the required high quality without interruption.”
Tominaga is confident that Pierrot Films, their new brand, will produce high-quality anime aimed at adults and original works. They aim to compete with anime that take long gaps and break the series into two or three seasons. In line with current trends, Bleach: TYBW Cour 3 will mark the new venture, with significant changes in animation style to provide high-quality visuals and engaging stories in a shorter period. Tite Kubo will be more involved in Season 3, as Tominaga mentioned that the author was involved in storyboarding to ensure the story’s significance wasn’t lost.
“The next series of ‘BLEACH: Thousand Years of Blood War’ is also planned to be produced at ‘PIERROT FILMS’. I believe this is a work aimed at people who have watched “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba” and “Jujutsu Kaisen,” so I hope to provide high-quality pictures and stories in a short period of time while strengthening the studio’s brand power. My goal is to go.”
The first anime of this new venture is Yatagarasu: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master, which will air alongside Crunchyroll’s Spring 2024 lineup.
