A woman who made a little girl cry on an airplane by not giving the child her pre-booked window seat is being praised.
Flying can be stressful, especially if you have to take your kids with you. Even though getting on a plane usually means going somewhere fun, the airport and the flight itself can be scary.
Some people get nervous when they fly, and having a specific seat can help them feel better. Some people just want to look out the window and see the sights, and both of these are good reasons to book a seat ahead of time.
But sometimes, everyone’s worst fear comes true and someone sits in the seat that’s written on your ticket, which makes for an awkward conversation.
One Reddit user went through this exact situation when she posted on the “Am I the A**hole?” forum to ask if she did the right thing after making a child cry.
The post read:
I (22F) am traveling internationally today. It’s an 8-9hour flight and I’m travelling alone. Leaving my family this time has been hard and I’ve been crying on and off the entire day. I had a window seat booked for my flight and I was looking forward to it.
When I got there, a child was sitting in my seat and her dad in the middle seat. I looked at the dad and pointed at the window seat saying that I think it’s my seat expecting him to move. He looked at me and said she’s a child and pointed at the aisle seat suggesting I take it.
The original poster said that she took the empty aisle seat and then told her family what had happened. Then, her dad called her and told her that he had paid extra for that seat, so it should be hers.
When she told the child’s father about this, he put her in the middle seat. When she was taken away from the window, she started to cry.
The man allegedly made rude comments the whole way, and the Reddit user sat back so the girl could see out the window, but she wasn’t sure if that was the right thing to do.
It’s safe to say that most people who showed their support thought she was right. One person said this:
You bought a seat to be able to use it, and the father in this situation knew that the seat he put his child in wasn’t theirs to use.
If the father wanted their child to have a window seat, they should have selected one. People choose their seats of preference for all sorts of different reasons, and they shouldn’t have to deal with someone just assuming that they can sit there.
A second person added:
No, what is this epidemic of people assuming they can take another person’s assigned seat? The seats can have different prices, and can be selected ahead of time. The father can keep his snide remarks to himself.
Others praised the woman for standing her ground and taking her seat. They also said it was very kind of her to sit back during the long flight so the child could see out the window.
