The Mayor, Wheeler supported the decision of the police to standby during an “Anti-Fascist” movement in Portland, in which black clad Antifa members caused chaos in the city.
The members of Antifa took to streets last weekend to protest against the shooting death of Patrick Kimmons, a 27 year old black man who was fatally shot by police officers last Sunday. The group which included members of Kimmons’ family, marched to the downtown Justice Center, directing traffic and chasing motorists.
Independent journalist and content writer documented the protest and was able to record several clippings where Antifa members forced their ways into busy intersections, threatened people who did not obey, directing traffic and even chased down a motorist, who made a right turn against their wishes by pounding on his silver Lexus and breaking a window while the police watched from a distance and did not intervene.
The video went viral bringing Wheeler under fire and responding to the situation, he tweeted that he was appalled by what he saw in the video and that he supports the decision of the Portland Police. He further added that he believes them as law enforcement professionals who have to take complex legal and safety issues.
The mayor has been accused of taking a kid gloved approach to such protests that churn the liberal enclave. One such incident was the summer occupation of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in which Portland police refused to assist the officers unless they were in physical danger.
Ted who also holds the title of police commissioner replied to the unflattering news coverage by Fox News saying that he is ready to accept all sorts of criticism from Fox but wouldn’t bear a single when it comes to the men and women of the police bureau of Portland.
