Back in March, Sony released official documents that have now become public, shedding light on the release timeline for the PlayStation 6.
The documents have been made available due to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in response to Microsoft’s planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard, as reported by PlayStation Lifestyle.
According to IGN, who reviewed the court documents, Microsoft has disclosed the “expected starting period” for the next generation of consoles.
Sony’s Plans for Playstation 6
Page 8 of the 22-page document reveals Sony’s claim that Microsoft had proposed to make Activision’s games available exclusively on PlayStation until 2027.
This implies that Sony intends to launch the PS6 sometime after 2027.
Further court documents obtained by IGN in light of recent news regarding a US regulator’s legal action to temporarily halt Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard provide additional insights.
The alleged documents indicate that Microsoft has revealed the “expected starting period” for the next-gen consoles, which is set for 2028.
The agreement between Sony and Microsoft ensures that Call of Duty games will be published on future PlayStation consoles, should they be released during the term of the agreement, with parity between PlayStation and Xbox.
Microsoft’s Purchase of Activision Blizzard
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has requested a temporary restraining order and injunction from a San Francisco federal court to halt Microsoft’s $69 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard, the California-based company behind popular games like Call of Duty and Candy Crush.
The deadline for the deal is just five weeks away, set for July 18, as per the original agreement signed in January 2022.
While the deal has been approved in several countries, regulators in the US and the UK have expressed concerns over potential competition suppression in the video game market.
Brad Smith, Microsoft’s vice chairman and president, expressed their readiness to present their case in federal court, emphasizing the belief that expediting the legal process will ultimately bring more choice and competition to the market.
Exciting Times Ahead for Gamers
With the revelation of potential release dates for the PS6 and new Xbox consoles, gamers can anticipate exciting times ahead as they await the next generation of gaming experiences.
