On 19 December, Wednesday, a judge sentenced rapper Juelz Santana to 27 months in jail for trying to get a loaded gun on board a flight which was leaving from New Jersey’s Newark in March this year.
As per court records, the Dipset hip-hop group member had earlier pleaded guilty to possess a weapon and controlled substance unlawfully in an aircraft. At the time, the charges may have led him to go behind bars for nearly five years.
The 36-year-old ‘Love & Hip Hop New York’ reality show star that was out on bail till now is only permitted to travel. However, the government was tracking his moves at all times. Santana had made return trips back home many times to deal with a curfew, said the court records further. Apart from performing in a concert in NYC, the rapper has also been shooting for ‘Love & Hip Hop New York.’
On 9 March evening, Santana reached the Newark Airport to catch a flight up to San Francisco, said the authorities.
While his luggage was being screened in the X-ray machine at the airport, the security officials discovered a loaded firearm along with oxycodone pills. Santana retreated and left the checkpoint area, leaving his belongings there. But eventually, he had to turn himself into the cops around two days later.
Just after the rapper is done serving his sentence time, he will remain under supervision for an extra twelve months.
This is not the first time that Santana, whose real name is LaRon James, has faced legal issues. He was earlier charged for weapon possession as well as a few drug offences in the year 2011.
Santana wasn’t taken to the jail immediately after being sentenced, having gotten the permission to appear in the Long Island Friday concert. It is still unclear on when the rapper will have to return himself into police custody.
