Richard Kline is an American actor and television director. He is known for his performances as Larry Dallas on the sitcom Three’s Company, Richie on the later seasons of It’s a Living, and Jeff Beznick on Noah Knows Best.
Early Life & Education
Richard Kline was born on April 29, 1944, and grew up in Queens, New York, to Jewish parents. He initially studied at Queens College before pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in theater at Northwestern University.
Following his college education, he enlisted in the US Army and served as a lieutenant in Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
Richard Kline’s Career
Following the war, Richard Kline’s interest turned to theater. In 1971, he made his first appearance on stage with the Lincoln Center Repertory Company. Kline then launched his Broadway journey in 1989 with the musical “City of Angels.”
In 1977, Kline embarked on his acting journey with his role as Larry Dallas on “Three’s Company.” He portrayed this character in 110 episodes and remained on the show until 1984.
Kline reprised his role as Larry Dallas in the spin-off series “The Ropers” (1979) and “Three’s a Crowd” (1985). Larry is the sole character, aside from Jack Tripper, to appear in both “Three’s Company” and its spin-offs.
In 1988 and 1990, Richard Kline served as host for two game show pilots, “Jumble” and “To Tell the Truth.” He was also a guest panelist on “Sweethearts” in December 1988. Additionally, he made appearances on “The $25,000 Pyramid,” “The $100,000 Pyramid,” “Super Password,” and “Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour.”
In Edison, NJ, he instructed a class on comedic acting at Middlesex County College in 2009. He played the role of Wizard in the inaugural national tour of “Wicked” in February 2010.
In October 2011, Kline was featured in “It Shoulda Been You,” alongside Tyne Daly. Additionally, he made an appearance in “Don’t Think Twice” in 2016.
Richard Kline joined forces once again with her former “Three’s Company” co-stars Joyce DeWitt, Jenilee Harrison, and Pricilla Barnes at “The Hollywood Show” in September 2016. The event, held in Chicago, allowed fans to get autographs, purchase memorabilia, and meet their favorite stars.
Richard Kline appeared as Kid Twist in the original production of “The Sting” starring Harry Connick Jr. in April 2018. Subsequently, he joined the national tour of “Waitress” and remained with the show until August 2019. He returned to the role when the musical opened on Broadway in the summer of 2019.
Since 2020, he has been conducting online acting lessons every week through his website. He has also guided actors such as Marilyn Ghigliotti.
Personal Life
From 1973 to 1980, Richard Kline was married to Kathleen Doyle. After their divorce, he tied the knot with Sandy Molloy in 1982. The couple welcomed one child, Colby Kline, before separating in 2002. In that same year, Kline entered into a marriage with Beverley Osgoode, and they have remained together since.
