Patricia and Rosanna Arquette seem to have stopped using Twitter after Elon Musk bought the site.
On Wednesday morning, the sisters’ Twitter handles and accounts stopped working, which seemed to show that they’d had enough. Even though Patricia and Rosanna didn’t say why many people think it’s because of a certain South African billionaire and his new policies.
Since Elon Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion, a lot of famous people have decided to stop using it. The self-proclaimed “Chief Twit” announced some big changes for users, such as getting rid of censorship, charging for verification, and putting up a paywall soon.
When celebrities like Whoopi Goldberg, Toni Braxton, Shona Rhimes, Gigi Hadid, and Ken Olin heard about these rules, they said they would no longer use Twitter and deactivated their accounts.
Whoopi Goldberg said that she was leaving her show on ABC recently.
“It’s been a little over a week since Elon Musk took over Twitter and this place is a mess,” she said. “I’m getting off today because I just feel like it’s so messy, and I’m tired of now having certain kinds of attitudes blocked now getting back on.
“So I’m gonna get out, and if it settles down enough and I feel more comfortable maybe I’ll come back. But as of tonight, I’m done with Twitter.”
The 66-year-old also said that “Some speech is not OK free speech. ”
Toni Braxton gave similar reasons for leaving the social media app: “I’m shocked and appalled at some of the ‘free speech’ I’ve seen on this platform since its acquisition. Hate speech under the veil of ‘free speech’ is unacceptable; therefore I am choosing to stay off Twitter as it is no longer a safe space for myself, my sons and other [people of color].”
Since Musk stopped censoring users as much, the use of racial slurs and Nazi ideas has gone up dramatically. This has made advertisers less likely to use the platform for fear of being associated with hate speech.
