His mother, Barbara Waite, was a former nurse employed by Squamish General Hospital. She was 64 years old when she was tragically killed by him. He also has a sister named Lisa Grantham.
Ryan Grantham completed his schooling at a local school in British Columbia, Canada. He then pursued a degree in psychology at Simon Fraser University, located in Burnaby, British Columbia.

In 2007, Ryan Grantham took his first steps into acting with The Secret of the Nutcracker, a Canadian TV movie in which he had the part of Billy. Since then, he has been featured in various Canadian television series, including The Latest Buzz, Mr. Young, and Really Me.
In 2011, he made his film debut in the feature film Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which was based on the popular novel by Jeff Kinney.
He also starred in the sequel, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, and reprised his role in the third installment, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw. He became renowned for his portrayal of Jeffery Augustine in the 2019 American teen drama show Riverdale.

On March 31, 2020, Ryan Grantham fatally shot his mother Barbara Waite with a .22 rifle while she was performing on the piano in their Squamish home. He proceeded to record a GoPro video confessing to the murder and displaying his mother’s corpse. He stated,
“I shot her in the back of the head. In the moments after, she would have known it was me.”
After consuming beer and marijuana for a lengthy period of time, he put a sheet over his mom’s corpse and set up lit candles near it.
He also dangled a rosary from the piano. He filled his car with three firearms, bullets, 12 Molotov cocktails, camping equipment, and a map of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s home in Ottawa.
His intention was to murder Trudeau and carry out a mass attack either at Vancouver’s Lions Gate Bridge or Simon Fraser University.
However, on April 1, 2020, he drove to the Vancouver Police Department, informing the officer, “I killed my mother.” He was taken into custody and indicted with first-degree murder. He eventually acknowledged his guilt of second-degree murder on March 9, 2021.
Justice Kathleen Ker sentenced him to life in prison without parole eligibility for 14 years at the British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver on September 22, 2021. She expressed the tragedy of the case, noting that the victim impact statements revealed the devastating consequences of the crime.
The judge also noted that prior to the homicide, Ryan Grantham had been struggling with anxiety, and depression, and had considered both suicide and taking someone else’s life. She also pointed out that he had expressed remorse and had been receiving psychiatric care while incarcerated.
