Marvel’s Secret Invasion was released on June 21, 2023, and it has already started hitting fans right where it hurts. If you’ve been a Marvel fan for a long time, you must know how painful it is to see the death of one of your favourite characters. Only two episodes in, and the show has killed off a beloved Marvel character. Spoilers ahead!
Who died in Secret Invasion Episode 2?
Marvel’s all-new Secret Invasion follows Samuel L. Jackson‘s character, Nick Fury who is warned about a secret Earth invasion by the Skrulls. As the shapeshifting Skrulls make their way onto Earth, Nick Fury gathers his allies to save humanity and prevent them from invading our planet. He is joined by his longtime friend and colleagues agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman).
The first episode shows us how Nick Fury is informed of the invasion of the Skrulls on Earth. As he tries to gather his best mates to put an end to this, we see Fury joining forces with familiar faces- Maria Hill, Everett Ross, and Talos. We also see some new and well-known faces in the MCU with the introduction of Emilia Clarke, Olivia Coleman, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.
We see Agent Hill and Fury trying to hunt down the leader of the rebel Skrull group, Gravik. Their hunt for Gravik lands Fury and Hill in Moscow and chaos ensues. Gravik learns about Hill and Fury’s arrival in Moscow and sets off a series of explosions.
As the explosions cause a ruckus and fill the air with thick fog, we see Maria Hill looking for Nick Fury in the final minutes of the Secret Invasion episode 1. As Fury makes his way towards Hill, he shoots her with a gun. We then see that it was Gravik who had shapeshifted as Fury and killed Maria Hill. As Maria falls to the ground, the real Nick Fury comes to inspect her while she’s taking her last breath. It’s more heartbreaking to learn that Agent Hill died thinking that Fury shot her.
Cobie Smulders Reacts to Secret Invasion
While speaking with Marvel.com, actor Cobie Smulders, who is known for her role as Maria Hill in the MCU, talked about the new series and her final scene. When asked if she knew about Maria Hill’s fate from the beginning, the actor responded-
“I always knew. I knew from the first call about it. I think it was an opportunity to just increase the stakes from the get-go. I think it was unexpected for everyone, including myself, but I think it really adds a level of reality — if this happens, where do we go from here?”
“[The creative team] was always very upfront with me about it. I was just excited to get to go and play her again, and play with Sam [Jackson] again, and the rest of this amazing cast. What a fricking dream. I got to meet Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, and Ben Mendelsohn, it was a wonderful project.”
She also talked about how it was to film the final scene.
“It was certainly emotional. It was a bit of a build to that last moment because we were shooting the entire sequence — the explosions, the running, the chasing, that square we were in for a couple of days. Sam and I had some lovely moments. Even though it was a violent send-off, it was a nice day on set for me.”
Cobie also thanked the fans for their love and support towards her character and expressed how much she has loved playing the character.
“Oh, gosh. Thank you doesn’t seem to cover it, does it? I just love playing a woman in this world, especially a woman that is as dedicated, loyal, trustworthy, and intelligent. It has been such an honor to be able to play her and to have been supported by so many Marvel fans. It’s the best feeling in the world. Thank you, but it doesn’t seem to quite cover it.”
