Selma Blair is a fighter, survivor, and thriver. The actress was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2018. Moreover, her immune system was reduced to one percent of its normal function. Being brave as she is, she broke the news to her son Arthur who is only giving her more strength in this journey. Selma Blair has now explained that she would go out of her way to raise her child.
Selma Blair recalls how she was always tired and sick growing up. She recalls, “They would say, ’OK, what kind of trauma have you had?’ ’We do think this is psychosomatic.’ But without any real neurological tests.” Fast forward to 2018, Blair was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis by neurologists. She says, “I had been down that road for so many years without a diagnosis that I did feel kind of hopeless still, but I was hoping that the diagnosis of MS would give me so many more options.”
Selma Blair and her crumbling health
After the diagnosis, Blair did not waste any time in making it public and addressing her health. She said, “I am disabled. I fall sometimes. I drop things. My memory is foggy. And my left side is asking for directions from a broken GPS. But we are doing it. And I laugh, and I don’t know exactly what I will do precisely, but I will do my best.” However, the actress did not back down.
Blair joined Dancing with the Stars and proved to the world that she was not done just yet. However, she had to soon opt out of it due to her crumbling health. Now, she wants to make bigger decisions in life and take more responsibility. She says, “There is a bigger responsibility to create iconic images with people that have disabilities. I know that my own MS took my career down. I had to stop working for years, even before I had my son [in 2011], because I wasn’t well.”
Moreover, the actress is looking for bigger pictures. She says, “The parts that I’m offered since I’ve had my diagnosis are the old woman, the person in the wheelchair, the person bumping into walls… I might be those things, but I’m still everything else I was before, and I shouldn’t be relegated to that.”
Selma Blair is a fan favorite
She also released ‘Mean Baby: A Memoir of Growing Up‘ in which she opened up about everything. The description reads, “Selma Blair has played many roles: Ingenue in Cruel Intentions. Preppy ice queen in Legally Blonde. Muse to Karl Lagerfeld. Advocate for the multiple sclerosis community. But before all of that, Selma was known best as … a mean baby. In a memoir that is as wildly funny as it is emotionally shattering, Blair tells the captivating story of growing up and finding her truth.”
Many people are in awe with Blair’s awesomeness. One user writes:
Just finished Selma Blair’s Mean Baby and, lord, how moving. Messy and honest, a raw exercise in piecing a life together through writing. I’ve listened to the audiobook and it was the first time I heard an author gasp with sobs while reading, such an unexpected punch in the gut.
The inspiring Selma Blair discussing her MS in 2019. Love how she mentions that it looks different for every person and that it will look different again within a year.
Being technically disabled is what it is. I didn’t know what MS was before I had it. My life is changed forever. But my girl Selma Blair documented the first year. Which is hard. Please watch her documentary. Introducing Selma Blair. An intimate look inside a person with MS.
