Shrek 5 release date is not announced officially and many of the fans are worried that the movie is canceled. It has been more than six years since we have seen any development on the new Shrek movie and even there are solid updates on the sequel progress. Ever since NBCUniversal has purchased Dreamworks, the future of Shrek 5 lies in limbo. There are some new rumors stating that production of Shrek 5 has been canceled over the Coronavirus pandemic, is there any truth to the news?
Shrek 5 Cancellation Rumors and News
Shrek 5 production is no longer continued as NBCUniversal has different priorities now. The animation team at Dreamworks has been told to work on the new “Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives and Forty Thieves” instead of the fifth Shrek movie. The Puss in Boots sequel has a release date of 2021 and the same animation crew will also work on the Shrek 5 sequel.

Since the schedule for both animated movies is now clashing, only of them can be continued. It is why the next movie in the Shrek franchise has been put on hold as the Covid-19 outbreak is creating problems for Puss in Boots 2 and they need all hands on deck. But that doesn’t mean Shrek 5 will be canceled as NBCUniversal has big plans for the Ogre based movie series.
Shrek 5 Release Date and Plot Theories
Shrek 5 release date is set in September 2022 as per the leaked reports and the slots booked for an untitled Dreamworks animated movie. It is also stated that the filming for Shrek 5 will start at the end of 2020 and it will take around one year to finish that. It will give the animators enough time to complete the post-production and be ready with the final product before the deadline.
Shrek 5 won’t be a regular sequel and will be a reboot instead, as they have hired Michael McCullers who has completed the script. Shrek reboot can be set in modern times where Shrek and Donkey are adapting with the current technology.
