The End of Ripley?
Sigourney Weaver has confirmed that she will not be reprising her role as Ellen Ripley in the “Alien” franchise. In a recent interview with Total Film magazine,
Weaver stated that “there are all kinds of younger actors taking this kind of role.”
She also revealed that the ship had sailed on the possibility of returning to the franchise, saying “there was an ‘Alien’ [film] that I really wanted to do with Neill Blomkamp and we didn’t get to do that, but, you know, that ship has sailed.”
The Blomkamp “Alien” Sequel That Never Was
Weaver was set to play Ripley for the fifth time in a movie that was to be directed by Neill Blomkamp. However, the film never got off the ground. Blomkamp had already scripted and prepped for the movie when it was shelved.
In 2015, Sigourney Weaver told Variety that the film would “break new ground.”
She also stated that Blomkamp was the perfect director for the job, saying “he’s a real fan. I think he’ll be true to the world and take it in unexpected directions.”
A Different Take on a Fifth Ripley Film
Sigourney Weaver has been offered the chance to join a new “Alien” movie more than once. In the summer of 2020, franchise producer Walter Hill sent Weaver a 50-page treatment for “a different take on a fifth Ripley film.” Hill served as a producer on every “Alien” movie and has a story credit on James Cameron’s “Aliens.”
However, Weaver didn’t seem too keen on the idea, saying “maybe Ripley has done her bit. She deserves a rest.”
New “Alien” Movie in Production
While Weaver won’t be reprising her role, a new “Alien” movie is currently in production. “Evil Dead” director Fede Alvarez is at the helm, and the film stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. Although the movie’s premise is under wraps, 20th Century Studios has confirmed that it will follow “a group of young people on a distant world, who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”
