It’s official: two of Kody Brown’s wives, Janelle and Christine, have exited the polygamous lifestyle they once openly embraced on the reality TV show Sister Wives. Their decision not only marks a new chapter for them but also potentially sets a precedent for the next generation.
The Exodus from Polygamy
In a time span of a mere year and a half, Janelle and Christine have turned their backs on polygamy. Christine has moved forward with her life, now engaged to David Woolley—a man who is clear about not wanting multiple wives.
Are Their Kids Following Suit?
Discussing the choices of their offspring, Janelle opened up to People Magazine. “None of our children have chosen to live polygamy,” she shared, underscoring a shift in generational values. Notably, she continued: “We don’t even have any really that are in the Mormon church, the mainstream [Latter-Day Saints] church.”
Janelle elaborated on their parenting approach, emphasizing spiritual individuality: “When they were growing up, we always just encouraged them to have a relationship with God, and I think many of them do in their own way…” She added candidly, “I think polygamy is hard, and I think you really do have to have a religious conviction, and they just don’t.”
Echoing his mother’s sentiments, Christine’s son Paedon made his stance crystal clear on a recent episode of Sister Wives. He expressed, “Polygamy no longer ‘works in my family.’”
Christine, looking at her own experiences and the observations of her children, commented, “They see how hard it is and they’re like, ‘No, no, no, no, no. No, that’s not for me.’”
Continued Tensions and Hopes for Healing
Despite the public breakups and personal decisions, the dynamics between the Browns remain complex. The reality of this is portrayed candidly in Sister Wives Season 18, particularly showcasing the strained relations between Christine and fellow wife, Robyn Brown.
Christine reflected on the situation, saying, “It’s difficult being around everybody.” She recounted a recent family gathering where the adult members were together. “Some of us get along great, but memories and hopes and experience are still too different for all of us. When we see each other we are cordial, but not a lot of conversations between us.”
Yet, even in the face of this discord, Christine remains hopeful for a united future. She believes that with time, the rough waters they currently navigate will lead to calmness. She expressed, “I’m hopeful that someday we can function as a family again… Sometimes it’s very rough waters, but eventually, hopefully, we can be around each other and it will be calm.”
The journey of the Brown family continues to captivate audiences, and as their personal choices unfold, one thing remains evident: the power of individual choice and the quest for personal happiness.
