On the 17th of December which was a Monday, Silvestre Bello, the Labor Secretary announced that SM Supermalls that are owned by Henry has regularized about 11,660 workers in the year 2018.
Bello explained in a press conference that SM regularization program includes workers which are used to be contractual employees who were under the agencies of manpower.
The workers were regularized for the time of 9 months from January through to September in the year 2018.
Bello also stated in the press briefing that they are expecting to regularize more workers on the arrival of the last quarter report.
Some 4,800 SM workers, who were based in Metro Manila were regularized according to the Laboe Chief, and it was followed by Mimaropa with some 1,476 workers and Calabarzon with around 2,865 workers and the remaining workers belonged to different regions.
In the month of May, Bello had announced that SM is committed on giving some 10,000 workers a permanent position.
This year, there has been an intensification in the compliance inspection of the labor law by the Department of Labor and Employment also referred as DOLE.
DOLE came out with a list comprising of companies which engaged in labor-only contraction which also included PLDT and Jollibee.
However SM was not a part of the list compiled by DOLE.
Jollibee, the fast-food Giant gave more than 1000 workers a permanent jobthis year as well as promised to bring out more permanent jobs next year.
Bello said that their company’s response was that they are planning to regularize much more than 1000 workers as they now that DOLE expects more from them.
He promised to accommodate more next year on the combined request of the workers and DOLE.
A net total of 411,449 workers were regularized this year according to DOLE.
Bello said that out of the total some 65% workers who were regularized were volunteers.
