The Sony PSP could be making a comeback! It is rumoured to be working on a new handheld PlayStation device called the Q Lite and there are plenty of leaks suggesting that we could indeed be seeing a new portable gaming device in the coming years. So, what do we know about the Q Lite, Sony’s latest attempt at a portable gaming console? Let’s find out.
Why is Sony developing the Plain Q Lite?
Noted tech leaker Tom Henderson has revealed in his blog Insider Gaming that Sony is currently working hard on the next iteration of their handheld device.
This handheld device is codenamed Q Lite and is not going to be a standalone console, but an addition to the PlayStation 5.
This doesn’t come as any surprise as Sony is also reportedly working on the next-gen PS5 Pro and PS5 Slim which are going to be improved versions of the Sony PSP.
According to Insider Gaming, the Q Lite will require the PS5 to function. This means it won’t be a cloud-streaming handheld device and could instead utilize Sony’s Remote Play to sync up with the PlayStation 5. This would make it differ from the usual Sony PSP.
Remote Play is a feature that allows gamers to enjoy their PlayStation 5 library of games on other devices nearby. The Q Lite will likely require an internet connection to function and sync up with the Sony PS5 to support 1080p and 60 FPS streaming.
Sony Q Lite Design
The Sony Q Litre is set to provide an impressive gaming experience. But will the handheld design be worth gloating over?
The Sony PSP was the company’s highest-selling handheld gaming console. It changed gaming allowing players to play their favourite games on the go. The Q Lite could look similar, except it’s going to be more advanced than the Sony PSP.
According to Insider Gaming, the Sony Q Lite could look like a PlayStation 5 controller with a massive 8-inch LCD touchscreen in the centre. The device also boasts adaptive triggers and other standard handheld gaming features.
Sony Q Lite Release Date
Right now, everything we know about the Sony Q Lite handheld device is just speculation. The Q Lite is reportedly in its QA phase and is expected to launch after the Detachable Disc Drive PS5 but before the PS5 Pro. This February Sony launched the PlayStation VR2 with a thinner design and improved comfort. The company is also gearing up for the second phase of the PS5, which will include new hardware offerings.
Sony could have big plans than Sony PSP for the next-gen PS5. According to industry insider Jeff Grubb, Sony’s upcoming game lineup will be a key part of this second phase, alongside new hardware products such as wireless earphones and headsets, and includes the highly anticipated Q Lite handheld device.
The PS5 Pro is expected to launch in late 2023 or early 2024 giving players plenty of time to enjoy the current PS5 and any new hardware releases in the meantime.
