El Muerto is the latest addition to Sony’s Spider-Verse spin-offs among the likes of Venom and Kraven the Hunter. With the huge success of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Sony has banked on some really good audience and critics reviews. On the contrary, its Morbius franchise was a box office disaster. It’s noteworthy that apart from Sony’s Spider-Man movies, the others haven’t proven to be as much of a hit at the box office.
Let’s find out what’s in store for Sony’s latest spin-off movie El Muerto.
El Muerto Plot Summary
Details about the movie’s plot are limited, but it is anticipated that the storyline will follow the main character on his adventures as a superhero wrestler. The masked luchador known as El Muerto, otherwise known as Juan-Carlos Estrada Sanchez in the comics, has a long history of donning a special mask which gives him incredible power. He has encountered many wrestlers, including Spider-Man, and even joined forces with the webbed hero on a number of occasions.
El Muerto Release Date
The initial release date for the movie was slated as January 12, 2024. However, with the ongoing strike in Hollywood, it is likely the date will be pushed further. There’s going to be production delays and no official announcement has been made by the studios regarding its filming dates.
Latest reports suggest that Sony has dropped El Muerto from its release calendar. Earlier in June 2023, the fate of El Muerto seemed to be hanging by a thread when there were reports about Sony officially removing the movie from its release schedule. However, it is possible that the same was done due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Moreover, El Muerto isn’t that big of a comic character to begin with. Unlike Venom who is extremely famous among Spider-Man fans, the masked luchador has comparatively a much smaller role in the comics. Nevertheless, fans can remain hopeful until Sony makes any official announcements of canceling the spin-off.
Additionally, a scooper recently disclosed that the movie has been officially canceled by Sony.

Casting Updates
Sony hadn’t revealed much information regarding El Muerto, to begin with. However, it was revealed that Grammy-nominated singer and actor Bad Bunny will be cast for the titular role in the movie. While there was a lot of buzz around Bad Bunny’s casting in the Spider-Man universe, it has been reported that the singer-actor will no longer be a part of the movie.
At Vanity Fair’s interview with Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, better known as Bad Bunny, the question about El Muerto was met with a vague answer. His publicist swiftly directed the interviewer to the next topic, before Martínez uttered, “I don’t know what to say,” and labeled the incident as “delicate.” The publicist then provided a more defined answer regarding the movie, declaring, “Obviously, it’s out.”
Martínez has a full plate, what with being a Grammy-nominated musician and now an actor. Since the Spider-Man spinoff has been pushed back due to the Hollywood strike, he might have been forced to leave the movie, causing the rumored cancellation. It was a thrilling prospect for Martínez to secure the role of El Muerto, as it would be the first time a Latin actor starred in a Marvel movie.
