Spencer Herron, a former teacher at Carlton J. Kell High School in Marietta, Georgia, has been convicted of sex crimes. During his tenure at Kell, he was responsible for teaching video production classes. In 2018, Herron was arrested on charges of sexual assault alleged by two of his students.
Today, we will dive deep into the story of Spencer Herron, did he commit those crimes or was he innocent? Let’s find out!
Who is Spencer Herron?
Spencer Herron of Acworth, Georgia was a highly esteemed individual in the area, particularly due to his past as a business proprietor and his involvement in the Air National Guard band. The supposed Berry College alumnus additionally filled in as a video creation educator at Kell High School in Cobb County, where he was honored with the “Teacher of the Year” title twice.
He was seen as an excellent teacher by all who knew him, until the allegations of sexual misconduct, involving at least three of his students from the past two years, were made public in June 2018.
Court documents state that Spencer started sending a female student messages during the summer of 2016, trying to trick her into meeting him under the guise of a nonexistent school organization. Over the course of the school year, he managed to sexually exploit her both at school and away from it, with papers showing that Spencer kept up the illusion of taking her away on “unauthorized ‘field trips'” as well.
The assault stopped in 2017, probably before she completed her studies, and yet she still had the strength to report him within a few months, despite the oppressive atmosphere.
It is alleged that Spencer abused his authority over two female students multiple times in both the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years. One of the victims allegedly reported to law enforcement that Spencer had intercourse with her even after she had refused him. Furthermore, the other girl said that Spencer told her to hush when she started crying.
Sadly, these scenarios didn’t seem to progress – Spencer’s 15-year career concluded in June 2018 because of the former alone. Law enforcement agents took him into custody from his home and set a $55,220 bond.
Where is the high school teacher now?
Spencer Wayne Herron pleaded guilty to six charges of sexual assault in 2019 that were linked to the various episodes his victims suffered through. He was not charged with statutory rape in spite of his victims being underage due to the legal age of consent in Georgia being 16. This is despite his nearly 60 extramarital affairs from 2012 onwards, which were apparently manipulative but not forced.
He was given a total of 6 years of imprisonment, with 5 to be served inside the jail and an additional 15 years of probation, for which he must obey the rules of a sex offender, which forbids him to have any contact with his victims or minors.
Consequently, upon his early release from a penitentiary in the summer of 2022, Spencer is now on probation in Gwinnett County and is registered as a sex offender.
Spencer Herron’s ex-wife Jenifer Faison stated,
“I never would have imagined the scope of what he had done,”
Spencer’s case was adapted for a true-crime show titled ABC’s Betrayal: The Perfect Husband. In one of the episodes, his ex-wife Jenifer expressed her remorse for being married to the sex offender.
“He was living a double life. Who was this predator that I was married to? I was just looking for all the answers. Little did I know, I was married to a man who had done something so horrible that it would devastate our lives and change us forever.”
“Like, I needed a timeline. I needed to know when did this start, and when did this end? If it ever ended, I had to see…was it anything that I had done at any point?”
Betrayal was released on July 11, 2023, and is available to stream on Hulu.
