Star Wars-famed John Boyega has finally put the rumours about him joining Marvel to rest. The British actor has been making headlines for his potential secret role in Marvel movies. However, in a recent interview with Men’s Health magazine, the actor spilt all the beans.
Who would John Boyega play in Marvel?
Comic fans have been desperately manifesting to see John Boyega make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Many fans have speculated that the 31-year-old had already secretly filmed for Marvel back in May 2022. There was also an unconfirmed report of John’s involvement in Captain Marvel‘s sequel film The Marvels. According to some fans, John seemed suitable to play the role of Bishop in the X-Men movies. While there were also speculations of him being cast as Blue Marvel in The Marvels.
The British actor is widely known for his role as Finn in the Star Wars Trilogy. He has often been outspoken about how Disney was using Black characters more as a marketing gimmick than giving depth to his character.
“What I would say to Disney is do not bring out a Black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side,”
“It’s not good. I’ll say it straight up.
Star Wars fans suspected this might be a reason for his reduced screen time in the series. John did not hold back on expressing his disappointment with how Finn’s character was mishandled by Disney.
“What they want you to say is, ‘I enjoyed being a part of it. It was a great experience…’ Nah, nah, nah. I’ll take that deal when it’s a great experience.”
“They gave all the nuance to Adam Driver, all the nuance to Daisy Ridley,”
“Let’s be honest. Daisy knows this. Adam knows this. Everybody knows. I’m not exposing anything.”
Will We See John Boyega In MCU?
Much to fans’ disappointment, John Boyega has refuted the rumours of him joining the MCU anytime soon. In the interview, Boyega revealed that he has no intentions of doing any Marvel projects. It is important to note that Marvel is backed by Disney which could be the reason of the actor’s hesitation to join them.
“That’s not in the vision for me now. I want to do nuanced things. I want to donate my services to original indie films that come with new, fresh ideas, because I know it’s real hard to top Iron Man in that universe.”
However, it doesn’t imply that Boyega may never join the MCU. The actor has also praised Marvel for Sam Wilson’s character (played by Anthony Mackie) in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
“We’ve got people now watching Falcon And The Winter Soldier, and a lot of people have been commenting about the elevation of Falcon’s character – right? – in the series and how they’ve really done well with bringing him up, which I also agree as well. You know, and we can see there is – that’s because you give characters these special moments, you know.”
But that does not faze John Boyega and MCU fans from keeping their dreams alive for a “marvel”. With the recent assault allegations on Jonathan Majors, it is quite evident that MCU will cut ties with the star and recast Kang’s character. This has reignited hopes for fans to see Boyega play Kang in the upcoming Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
John’s Future Projects
While the fans await MCU and John Boyega’s collaboration to happen, the British actor has bold plans for his future projects. His agent Femi Oguns revealed that as an actor John’s goal is “To disrupt the industry and also to make history,”.
“For John, it was never about trying to fit into the box. He wants to be the outline of the box.”
Femi Oguns further stated that Boyega has intentionally avoided playing roles that portray drug dealers or enslaved characters. It’s John’s way of disrupting the industry’s portrayal of Black actors.
“For John, it’s all about accountability. He doesn’t want to be defined by any stereotypical roles.”
Boyega certainly proved his acting abilities last year with the 2022 American thriller, Breaking, and The Woman King starring Viola Davis. The Woman King received the 2022 Critic’s Choice Movie Award for The Best Acting Ensemble.
