Many fans of Stranger Things have been wondering whether the show is canceled since the announcement that the fifth season will be the last. Given Netflix’s tendency to end shows early, it is understandable to question whether this is the reason why there won’t be a Stranger Things Season 6.
Did Netflix cancel Stranger Things season 6?
It was confirmed last year that there won’t be a Stranger Things season 6, but this decision was not due to a cancellation by Netflix. Rather, it was the plan all along to end the series after the fifth season. While Netflix has a reputation for canceling shows abruptly, this is not the case with Stranger Things.
The Duffer brothers, creators of Stranger Things, announced on February 17, 2022, that the show would end after season five. In a heartfelt letter to fans, they explained that they never intended for the show to go on indefinitely and that season five would be a satisfying conclusion to the story they wanted to tell. They also expressed their gratitude to the cast, crew, and fans for their support throughout the show’s run.
“Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for ‘Strange Things.’ At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but — as you’ll see for yourselves — we are now hurtling toward our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; Season 5 will be the last.”
It’s probably a good thing that there won’t be a Stranger Things season 6. The actors who play the kids are growing up fast. Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven in the series, is already 19 years old and engaged to be married. Some of the other actors are also in their late teens and early twenties. COVID-19 pandemic-related delays pushed the filming of season 4 to August 2021, so the kids still looked like they were in high school in that season. But after that, it would have been difficult to make them look like teenagers without resorting to some TV magic or a time skip.
Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer have revealed that while the main storyline of Stranger Things will come to an end after season 5, there will still be spinoffs set in the same universe. So don’t worry, we won’t be saying goodbye to the Upside Down just yet! It’s clear that the show’s creators are keen to keep exploring the eerie, supernatural world they’ve created. Who knows what kind of spinoffs we might see?
Thrilled to announce The Boroughs, a new supernatural mystery series from Executive Producers The Duffer Brothers (Stranger Things) and Upside Down Pictures, created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance) is coming to Netflix!

Perhaps we’ll follow new characters as they encounter the horrors of the Upside Down for the first time, or maybe we’ll get to delve deeper into the history of this strange, otherworldly dimension. All we know for sure is that the Duffer Brothers have no shortage of ideas when it comes to the Stranger Things universe. The Duffer brothers are not keen to let go of the universe they created.
Stranger Things Season 5 Release Date
Filming for season five of Stranger Things is set to start in June 2023, which is good news for fans who had to wait three years between seasons 3 and 4. The release date for season 5 is uncertain as there is no official news, but it could be as soon as early 2024. It is unclear if season 5 will follow the same release model as season 4, which was split into two volumes.
