A teacher recently talked about how her life has changed since she quit teaching to work at Costco, a big wholesale store.
When she first talked about it, Maggie Perkins stressed that her life is much better now that she quit her job as a teacher and started working in retail at a wholesaler.
The 30-year-old said that she loved teaching, but after working 60-hour weeks for less than $50,000, she was very tired.
The conditions were not sustainable to have a quality of life.
She said that they didn’t change even after she switched from teaching in public schools to private schools.
Now, in a new interview, Perkins said that her new job as a cashier at Costco gives her the balance she’s always been looking for.
There’s a term called job creep, which is when additional duties are slowly assigned to you, and then those duties are never relieved from you. And over time, it causes you to be burned out from the first reason you became a teacher, which is loving the students, loving teaching. And then they, you know, remind you [to] remember your why and remember your passion,
she explained on the network’s show, Varney & Co.
But my passion couldn’t pay my bills, and my passion couldn’t help me sleep at night when I was always waiting for the other shoe to drop,
the former teacher added.
When asked what’s good about her new job at Costco, Perkins said that she likes “everything” about the company.
We grew up going to Costco, and so I’ve always known that Costco employees are treated well and have a high quality of life. So when there was a new Costco being built in my town, I immediately applied. And there is [sic] more than 3000 applications for less than 300 jobs.
And I was lucky enough to get one of those jobs,
Perkins said.
On TikTok, the 30-year-old also talks about how she suddenly changed careers.
I mean, I just worked seven days straight [at Costco], including Christmas Eve, and I feel fine. As a teacher. It was like I was just surviving every moment. By the time I got to Christmas break, I was so exhausted that I was literally sick. So, yeah, feels pretty good to not be a teacher at this time,
Perkins told her 85,000 followers.
She also makes “day in the life” videos at her new job, and she gets hundreds of compliments for putting her health ahead of her job.
