Greta Gerwig’s biggest directorial project, Barbie is about to hit theatres soon and fans cannot wait. The comedy-drama movie is one of the most anticipated movies of 2023. While the movie trailer gave us a glimpse of what to expect from the movie, Gerwig’s long-time fans know that there’s a lot more to come from the movie.
Barbie 2023 Plot
The synopsis of the movie describes that the movie follows the lives of Barbie, played by Margot Robbie, and Ken, played by Ryan Gosling. Robbie and Gosling’s character are living their lives in the dreamy Barbieland with other Kens and Barbies. However, their perfect life takes a turn when they find themselves in the real world among humans. Warner Bros. summarises the movie as-
“To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.”
Aside from Margot Robbie playing the titular character along with Ryan Gosling as Ken, the movie boasts a stellar cast list. These include America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell. The film also stars Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Scott Evans, Jamie Demetriou, Connor Swindells, Sharon Rooney, Nicola Coughlan, Ritu Arya, Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Dua Lipa and Oscar-winner Helen Mirren.
Reddit Fan Reveals A Plot Twist
A fan named AdmirableTour41 on Reddit posted his theory about the upcoming Greta Gerwig movie on the r/FanTheory subreddit.
“I’m not sure if this is the right subreddit but I was told to post this. Barbie in the start is shot how a child plays with them. She doesn’t walk to her car, she floats down, there isn’t water in Barbie land because it’s a dollhouse, Barbie’s clothes are magically waiting for her in the closet because a child puts them there, etc. so what if instead of this about [she is] becoming self aware, it’s about a child growing up? The harsh reality of the real world such as death. Maybe it’s a dumb theory but I think it’s a cool concept!
TLDR; [The movie] is about a child growing up and learning about the real world”
Considering Gerwig’s past projects such as Lady Bird, Frances Ha, and Little Women, it seems quite likely that the movie will have a deeper meaning to it. Regardless of its comedy-drama genre, Gerwig is talented enough to draw a lot of depth to her movie characters and the storyline. While AdmirableTour41’s theory may not be true, the fact that fans are already trying to figure out the inside details certainly reflects the excitement among the audience.
Barbie hits theatres on July 21, 2023.
