American actor Denzel Washington is set to reprise his role as Detective Lincoln Rhyme in the second instalment of The Bone Collector. The 1999 movie was a commercial success and also starred Angelina Jolie in the lead role. Jolie played the role of Amelia Donaghy, who was a newly recruited patrol officer who partners with Denzel Washington’s character.
Will there be The Bone Collector 2 starring Denzel Washington?
Considered an underrated gem, the announcement of the sequel of The Bone Collector will certainly excite a lot of thriller fans. Reports suggest that Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie will both be reprising their roles as Lincoln and Donaghy in the sequel. The news was confirmed by The Giant Freakin Robot. The 1999 movie was a box office success earning $150 million against a $48 million budget. While it did not impress many critics, the movie was certainly a hit among the fans.
The movie was based on Jeffrey Deaver’s book of the same name. Fans were disappointed to see no news of a sequel of Denzel Washington’s hit thriller since Deaver had released several other books that followed Lincoln and Donaghy’s (Sachs in the book) journey. His 2014 book titled The Skin Collector would surely make for a good sequel story.
When author Jeffrey Deaver was asked what made him write the sequel to The Bone Collector all these years later, he said that he had left a subplot open.
“When I finished “The Bone Collector,” I left the story open. The core of the crime was solved and the bad guy was caught, but I left open a subplot. I came back to it after five or six books, so part of it was resolved, but there were still aspects that were not. So it finally came time to put that subplot to bed so we can move on. That’s really the point of what’s going on in this book.”
Deaver was asked if there would be a sequel movie to The Bone Collector which starred Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie, to which he responded,
“As far as I know, there is some kind of business reason [it hasn’t happened]. I don’t know if it’s a lawsuit or a dispute of some sort between distributors or who was involved in financing the film, but my understanding is that it’s not a creative issue — it’s a business issue — and in Hollywood, that’s nothing to minimize.
However, he did believe that the sequel would have made a “popular TV show” while comparing Lincoln Rhyme to Sherlock Holmes.
I think it would be quite the popular TV show. We’ve seen alternative characters on TV on “Breaking Bad,” “The Walking Dead” and “Elementary,” the show about Sherlock Holmes, who is a bit like Rhyme. He’s an intellectual hero rather than an action hero. I’ve actually pitched it to TV studios with the caveat that the business stuff would have to be resolved first.
The Bone Collector 2 Plot
While it’s unknown which one of Deaver’s books will serve as an inspiration for the sequel, The Skin Collector could certainly be one of the top picks. After all, the author himself has called it a “direct sequel” to The Bone Collector. According to its description, The Skin Collector tells a disturbing tale of a New York-based serial killer who stalks the city streets and works underground.
He is known to use lethal poison to kill his victims. While there isn’t much for Rhymes and Sachs to investigate about the killer, he does leave cryptic messages etched in his victim’s skin. The killer is called The Skin Collector and is a tattoo artist who works in an isolated workshop where he lures most of his victims. It will certainly be a fan service for The Bone Collector fans to see Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie reunite on-screen for one last ride.
