The Full Monty Season 2 might be happening after all. The British-American comedy-drama miniseries premiered on June 14, 2023, with the original cast of the 1997 movie. Season 1 launched 8 episodes of the series and fans are dying to know if there will be a Season 2. Well, we’ve got the answer for you.
The Full Monty’s Plot
Hulu’s latest limited series, The Full Monty has garnered a lot of love from the fans and critical reviews. The series picks up 26 years later from where the 1997 film concluded. The film told a humorous yet touching story about six unemployed men in Sheffield, England. The series follows their story 26 years later when they are still struggling to navigate Sheffield through its crumbling healthcare, employment, and education system.
It comprises the original cast reprising their role-
- Robert Carlyle as Gary “Gaz” Schofield
- Mark Addy as David “Dave” Horsfall
- Lesley Sharp as Jean Horsfall
- Hugo Speer as Guy
- Paul Barber as Barrington “Horse” Mitchell
- Steve Huison as Lomper
- Paul Clayton as Dennis
- Tom Wilkinson as Gerald Cooper
The story still revolves around the original gang and some of their kids. We see the gang struggling and getting through the harsh realities of life. It touches upon sensitive and important subjects like LGBTQ+ representation and healthcare workers’ misery. However, the creators ensure that the story’s theme holds its uplifting and heartwarming storytelling. With the first season ending in 8 episodes, fans are wondering if there will be The Full Monty Season 2.
Will there be The Full Monty Season 2?
Much to the fans’ disappointment, Hulu has not renewed The Full Monty for a second season. Since the show was intended to be a miniseries, there does not seem to be a possibility of the network picking it up for a second season. There was no question about the show’s viewership count or its reception as it was well-received by fans and critics alike. There hasn’t been any official announcement about The Full Monty Season 2 by the network so far.
Here are a few verified reviews about the show on Rotten Tomatoes–
“Though the series is sensible enough on its own terms, familiarity with the film will make it a richer, and not at all a disappointing, experience; the show is faithful to its predecessor’s spirit.”
Robert Llyod, Los Angeles Times
“It’s a bittersweet look at the British working class, elevated by a charismatic cast and a tone that, even amid the personal pain and systemic failures, is tinged with optimism.”
Mathew Gilbert, Boston Globe
“This indeed may be the case where just spending time with old friends and a few new ones is enough.”
Joel Keller, Decider
“Good, sharply written (and acted) series that lacks the sizzle, pop and magic of the movie.”
Verne Gay, Newsday
Although, it’s not all bad news. While speaking to Digital Spy, actor Mark Addy said that he certainly sees the potential of The Full Monty Season 2 as he stated, “Yeah. Can’t see why not.” To which his co-actor Steve Huison added, “Absolutely. I’d be happy to do more.”
Steve Huison who plays the role of Lomper in the series continued to talk about the possibility of The Full Monty Season 2,
“It’s kind of heart-warming and uplifting. It may make you cry at times, but it’s, you know, beautiful to be a part of. So, of course, if there’s any more, I’m in.”
He further added how the series explored more subjects in detail like NHS, education, and the healthcare system within Sheffield.
“Where the film was looking at a little specific closure of a steelworks that affected this particular group of men, you’ve got eight hours of this series to explore what’s happened to the education system, the NHS, the care system.”
“Why are nurses having to use food banks in 2023? There are a lot of important societal issues that are being explored, but with Simon Beaufort’s trademark humour, wit, and intelligence, and these characters’ sort of will to survive against all the odds.”
Until there’s no new update about The Full Monty Season 2, you can catch Season 1 which is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
