Veena Sud Takes the Reigns at Amazon MGM
After a rollercoaster of adaptations and reboots, Amazon MGM Studios seems to have finally cracked the code. The tech giant’s entertainment division announced Veena Sud as the showrunner for its upcoming ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ television series, injecting much-needed adrenaline into this cult classic story.
“Per Variety, the long-gestating plans for a television adaption of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo are finally moving forward at Amazon MGM Studios with the announcement of Veena Sud as its new showrunner.”
Veena Sud isn’t a newbie when it comes to crafting intense crime dramas. Having previously led AMC’s crime drama ‘The Killing,’ which was an adaptation of the Danish series ‘Forbrydelsen,’ Sud is well-versed in bringing foreign stories to English-speaking audiences. Her 2018 psychological horror flick, ‘The Lie,’ further showcases her knack for pulse-pounding narratives.
What’s in Store for the New Adaptation?
The world of ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ is dense, dark, and daunting. The Millennium novels, penned by Swedish author Stieg Larsson, have already spawned a Swedish film trilogy and a U.S. movie, which was later followed by a not-so-well-received sequel, ‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web.’
Given the legacy, it would be easy to assume that the TV series will follow the well-trodden path. But Sud and her team are opting for a curveball.
“Surprisingly, when The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo television series was first announced back in 2020, it was suggested that the show would follow an entirely original story centered on the character of the asocial computer hacker Lisbeth Salander.”
Intriguingly, this suggests a fresh take on the character of Lisbeth Salander, who has been previously immortalized by Noomi Rapace, Rooney Mara, and Claire Foy. It’s still up in the air as to who else from the Millennium novels, including Mikael Blomkvist, might make an appearance in this reboot.
Will The New Series Right Past Wrongs?
The previous installment, ‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web,’ failed both critically and commercially. The announcement of a fresh take led by Sud could be the lifeline this franchise so desperately needs.
“With 2018’s The Girl in the Spider’s Web considered a box office bomb and largely failing to resonate with critics, perhaps this new approach will serve to breathe fresh life into the franchise.”
Sud’s track record suggests she could be the perfect candidate to steer this ship away from the iceberg and into smoother waters. Her experience adapting foreign crime stories for English-speaking audiences, paired with her skill in psychological horror, might just be the missing link this series needs to gain the recognition it deserves.
So, hold onto your seats! Veena Sud is reviving ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,’ and if her past work is any indication, we’re in for a jaw-dropping ride.
