The first episode of The Last of Us drama series was released on Jan 15th, 2023.
It received good reviews from audiences and critics alike. Some say the series might end the video game adaptation curse. It has also left the audience wondering if the ending of the series will be the same as the video game. Spoilers ahead in case you haven’t played the game already.

The game was developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The team responsible for creating The Last of Us was led by the game director Bruce Straley and creative director Neil Druckmann. The game designer is Ricky Cambier. It also features an original score composed by Gustavo Santaolalla.
The Last of Us is an action-adventure game that is played from a third-person perspective. The players can use various weapons, hand-to-hand combat, and stealth mode to defend themselves. The game also uses Artificial Intelligence or AI for the NPCs or enemies to keep track of the protagonist to attack. It can be played in single-player as well as multiplayer mode.

Synopsis
The story follows two protagonists, Joel and Elli. In 2013, the world gets affected by a mutant fungus of the genus Cordyceps. This turns humans into zombies. Joel, his daughter Sarah and Tommy try to escape in a car, but Sarah dies in an altercation with a soldier.
Twenty years later, civilization as we know it ends, and few people who survived are in quarantine. Joel starts a smuggling business with his new friend Tess and gets involved with a group called Fireflies. Fireflies are a group of people fighting against the tyrant military of the USA.
The group leader asks Joel and Tess to smuggle a girl named Ellie. The three of them get caught by the military during their escape and get tested for the fungus. Joel and Tess come out negative, but Ellie seems to have developed a resistance to the infection. They attack the scientists and make a run, and Tess dies along the way. Joel and Ellie make it to Fireflies.
The Last of Us ending
When people find out Ellie is immune, they want to take a portion of her brain to develop a vaccine and help fight the infection. But this will result in Ellie’s death. When she is captured and taken into the lab for surgery, Joel fights to get to her in time. He had developed a good bond with her and didn’t want to lose her as he had already lost his daughter once.
Joel leaves a trail of bodies on the way and kills the good-intentioned scientists about to perform the surgery. When Ellie wakes up, he lies to her, stating that others are immune and were unsuccessful in making the vaccine. Then they both make it to Tommy, who Joel feels he and Ellie might be safe with—marking the end of the game in Part 1.
How similar is the series to the game?
After the first episode’s release, many were happy with the attention to detail in the Scenes. Netizens were quick to point out the similarities between the game and the series lauding the creators for their faithfulness to the game.

The Last of Us drama series, with 4.7 million views, is HBO’s second-largest debut since 2010. With the show’s current direction, one can estimate that the makers would stay true to the game and stick to a similar ending as in the video game.
