Comedian and actress, Amy Schumer recently revealed the real reason behind her exiting from Barbie. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is among the most-anticipated movies of 2023. The movie will see award-winning actors such as Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the lead.
Why Did Amy Schumer Walk Away From ‘Barbie’?
Back in 2016, Amy Schumer was set to play the lead role in Sony Production’s Barbie. The movie was based on the idea and original screenplay by Hilary Swinston and Amy Schumer and her sister Kim Calamere has plans to co-write the scripts. However, as reported by Variety in 2017, Amy Schumer decided to exit the film citing scheduling conflicts. The actress released a statement to Variety that said-
“Sadly, I’m no longer able to commit to Barbie due to scheduling conflicts. The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.”
Despite that, Sony was adamant about bringing Barbie to the multiplexes as the production of merchandise and toys was already in motion. Following Amy Schumer’s exit, Sony released a statement stating its intention to move forward with the project without the comedian.
“We respect and support Amy’s decision. We look forward to bringing Barbie to the world and sharing updates on casting and filmmakers soon.”
Although, it has recently been revealed that “scheduling conflicts” were not the real reason for Amy Schumer’s exit from the movie.
The Real Reason Amy Schumer Left ‘Barbie’
In a recent interview on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, Amy Schumer said she walked away from the project due to “creative differences.” Here’s what she had to say-
“I can’t wait to see the movie, it looks awesome,”
“I think we said it was scheduling conflicts, that’s what we said. But yeah, it really was just creative differences. But you know, there’s a new team behind it, and it looks like it’s very feminist and cool so I will be seeing the movie.”
On being asked whether it was because the script didn’t feel ‘cool’ and ‘feminist enough’ that she exited the project, Amy Schumer was quick to respond with a “Yeah”.
She had also revealed in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter that,
“The studio definitely didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it. The only way I was interested in doing it.”
Even though Amy Schumer didn’t get to be a part of the film, she still had great things to say about the project. It is one of the most-awaited movies and has already created a lot of buzz among movie lovers. Greta Gerwig has been helmed as one of the best female directors and it will be interesting to see her bring Barbie to life.
