For those of you who don’t know, August 13 is celebrated as International Left-Handers Day. As a tribute to left-handed people everywhere, Hiptoro has put together this list of annoying things that left-handed people have to deal with every day.
If you’re left-handed, you probably know that this is a right-handed world, whether you like it or not. Everything seems to be made with right-handed people in mind, from scissors and desks to ring binders and ice-cream scoopers. This isn’t too surprising, since about 90% of the world’s population is right-handed.
Still, the list of left-leaning people in that last 10% is pretty impressive. Did you know that left-handed people like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Aristotle, and Julius Caesar? Also, let’s not forget Albert Einstein, Neil Armstrong, Winston Churchill, Bill Gates, and Barack Obama. And Jimi Hendrix. And Kurt Cobain. Paul McCartney, too. And David Bowie, Charlie Chaplin, Robert de Niro, Angelina Jolie, Keanu Reeves, Bruce Willis, Tom Cruise, Jon Stewart, and a lot of other people we don’t have room to write about. If we haven’t made our point yet, it’s that even though left-handed people are rare, that doesn’t make them any less awesome, and some of the most important things in the world have been made by left-handers.
Even so, people who aren’t on the right have had a hard time throughout history. The word “left” comes from the Anglo-Saxon word “lyft,” which means “weak.” The word “sinister” comes from the Latin word for “left,” which means “right.” People also thought that left-handed people were in league with the devil, and being left-handed was sometimes seen as proof that a woman was a witch and should be punished or even killed because of it. Luckily, those days are long gone. Now, left-handed people only have to worry about using a can opener without making a mess and writing without getting ink all over the side of their hand.
