How did Ben in The Umbrella Academy die?
The seven kids of the academy were born on the same day simultaneously in 1989. Later, they were adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves. Ben was also adopted by him along with Number Five, Klaus, Luther, Vanya, Diego and Allison.
The show is future based where all the children return to the US for the funeral of their father. They are not kids anymore. Ben has died till then, but he is featured in the series as part of Klaus interactions with the deceased.
The viewers first got to see Ben in one of the flashbacks when he was a part of The Umbrella Academy. In the flashback, the children were seen foiling a bank robbery. Ben, also called The Horror, enters the vault only to transform into a monster for killing the robbers.
As per the comics, it is assumed that Ben gets killed during one of such missions. However, the comics don’t reveal any details about his death. All we know is that Allison was seen blaming Luther for his death.
