The Winds of Winter release date has no updates even though the first month of the year 2020 has passed. George RR Martin promised to launch the next book in ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ this year but it looks like it might be delayed again.
Fans of the ASOIAF series are now worried that GRRM might not release Winds of Winter book in 2020 anymore and it might be pushed down further to 2021 or later. Even though George RR Martin promised that TWOW will release in July-August 2020, there are several reasons indicating why he might break the same and the book launch will be delayed.
GRRM Promise for ‘The Winds of Winter’ 2020 Release Date
George RR Martin made the promise of ‘The Winds of Winter’ release during last May when New Zealand airlines offered him a free ticket, so he can write the sixth book of ASOIAF series in peace in their country. But the 71-year-old author politely declined the offer and promised that he will finish TWOW very soon.

[blockquote footer=”George RR Martin”]If I don’t have THE WINDS OF WINTER in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for Worldcon 2020, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I’m done. Just so long as the acrid fumes do not screw up my old DOS word processor, I’ll be fine.[/blockquote]
The Winds of Winter Reasons for Delay
It seems now that George RR Martin has to actually sit in the small cabin given he is nowhere close to finishing Winds of Winter book. The reason why the book is not done and getting delayed is that GRRM is changing the ending of the story after Game of Thrones Season 8 premiered last year. Everyone hated that controversial ending and Martin will make sure not to repeat the same.

“People know an ending, but not the ending. The makers of the TV show had overtaken me, which I didn’t expect,” said GRRM in a German newspaper interview. It simply means that George is changing the ending of ‘The Winds of Winter’ from GOT season 8 and hence the book will be delayed from the 2020 release date.
