The Witcher, a series that has captured the hearts of fans around the globe, initially had many flocking to screens primarily for Henry Cavill’s intense portrayal of the monster hunter, Geralt of Rivia. But as the seasons progressed, another character emerged from the shadows and proved herself to be the story’s heart: Ciri, the young Princess of Cintra.
The Complex Tale of a Princess
Ciri’s introduction to us in The Witcher is anything but ordinary. She’s a young princess, orphaned and left under the caring yet stern guidance of her grandmother, Queen Calanthe. But this life of palaces and royalty gets brutally disrupted when the Nilfgaardians, a mighty army, invade her homeland. Ciri is thrust into a whirlwind journey of discovery and danger as her world collapses around her.
She finds a protector in Geralt, and together they navigate the treacherous landscapes of a war-torn continent. But Siri isn’t just any damsel in distress; she’s a young woman grappling with prophecies about her future. Rumors swirl about her being the next Witcher, while others whisper about a destiny where she might save the world. And as the third season concludes, we see Ciri taking control of her story, trying to figure out who she truly is amidst all these legends.
The Witcher’s executive producer hints, “Ciri could very well be the main character, not Geralt.”
Meet Freya Allan: The Force Behind Ciri
Ciri’s character is multi-dimensional, requiring an actress with depth and range. And who better than Freya Allan to bring this character to life? Before taking on the role of Ciri, Allan had already dabbled in acting, making her presence felt in various shows and movies. In the Netflix movie Gunpowder Milkshake, she was seen as a younger version of Karen Gillan’s character, Sam. Plus, she had guest roles in popular shows like Into the Badlands and The War of the Worlds.
However, her casting story for The Witcher is a bit of a fairy tale. Initially, Allan believed she was auditioning for a minor role, Marilka. Imagine her surprise when she was called back not for Marilka but for a lead role – Ciri!
“I was in total shock! One day I thought I was playing Marilka, and the next, I was Ciri,” recalls Allan.
Freya’s Star Continues to Shine Bright
Since stepping into the shoes of Ciri, Allan’s career has soared. She’s bagged a role in the much-awaited sequel, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. She’s also showcasing her versatility by dipping her toes into horror with a film titled Baghead.
With her talent and dedication, there’s no doubt that Allan is going places. And as Ciri’s storyline becomes even more central to The Witcher, fans are on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating what the actress and her character will bring to the table in the next exciting chapter.
