TikTok has over 1 billion active users worldwide. This means there could be 1 billion different opinions on a given topic. Something similar happened on the platform when a waitress claimed that tipping should not be optional. The waitress thinks that tipping the server should be mandatory and that she has “zero respect” for people who skip that part. Fair Labor Standards Act states that a server must be paid at least $2.13 per hour from their employer. Most of the money comes from tipping especially around the holiday season when people feel extra generous. For most, the money is enough to get by. However, one TikTok waitress is angry at someone in particular and taking her frustrations out on the platform.
Waitress argues tipping should be mandatory on TikTok
Daylie Waters, a creator on TikTok who goes by the name ‘iamdaylie’, shared a video about an issue that bothered her in the waitressing profession – tipping. She said, “If you don’t have money to tip your server and you go out to eat and don’t tip your server, I have zero respect for you.” Daylie could be seen getting emotional in the video as tears ran down her cheek. However, that did not seem to bother a TikTok creator who had visibly opposing views on the matter.
TikTok creator ‘heyy_amir’ spazzed at the woman and slammed her logic. He said, “This is probably an unpopular opinion and I’m saying it anyway because I’m annoyed. Tipping is optional, whether we like that or not. He explains that while he always leaves something behind for the waiter, tipping still should not be mandatory. He continues, “People should be able to go out to eat, enjoy their time with their family and leave a tip if they feel like they want to do that. They are only obligated to pay for the meals that they’re eating. End of story.”
Many people had different opinions on the matter providing credibility to this article’s opening statement. Some users think that the server should be mad at the job that pays them only $2 per hour. On the other hand, some believe that the servers are helpless due to their financial situation and hence resort to less-paying jobs depending on tips. There are people who believe tipping is a way of showing gratitude to the server who brought the food to the table. Some think that tipping should be optional depending on the person ordering the food as they’re the ones paying.
