On Tuesday, October 18, a representative for Universal Studios said that they are working on making a sequel to the 1996 movie “Twister,” which was praised by critics and did well at the box office.
The upcoming sequel, “Twisters,” is being developed by Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment. Warner Bros. Entertainment will be co-financing the production of the film.
According to Universal, the screenplay for “Twisters” will be written by the same person who wrote the screenplay for “The Revenant,” and it will have viewers once again chasing the storm.
As per Universal, the film will also have Frank Marshall serving in the capacity of producer. However, there is currently no director attached to the project.
Deadline, which was the first to report that a director was needed for the sequel, said that Travis Knight (“Bumblebee”) and the husband-and-wife team of Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi (“Free Solo”) were among the directors who had been short-listed.
Additionally, Deadline named Dan Trachtenberg as a potential candidate; however, he refuted the news in a tweet, writing, “To whom it may concern. I am not making a TWISTER.”
The original movie was directed by Jan de Bont and starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. Stephen Spielberg served as an executive producer on the project. Other cast members, such as Philip Seymour Hoffman and Todd Field, contributed to “Twister’s” enormous success at the box office, where it grossed more than $494 million from audiences in over 100 countries.
The plot of the movie centered on Hunt’s character, Dr. Jo Harding, as well as a group of students who were getting ready to test a brand new data-gathering device in an intense tornado. It was praised for its creative use of special effects, and it inspired Universal Studios to make a ride based on it.
Universal has not confirmed whether or not Hunt will appear in the upcoming installment. Paxton passed away in 2017 at the age of 61 as a result of complications from heart surgery, and Hoffman passed away in 2014 at the age of 46.
Although Universal did not provide any details regarding the plot of the sequel, Deadline has reported that the story will center on Hunt’s character’s daughter, who shares the same passion for chasing storms as her parents. Universal did not comment on this report.
According to Deadline, Universal and Amblin are planning to begin principal photography for “Twisters” in the spring of 2023.
