On Tuesday, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk revealed the first underground tunnel built by his prestigious firm, The Boring Co. A video clip was released by The Boring Co. which featured a white color Tesla car being lowered around 30 feet down in the tunnel through an elevator.
The car was fixed onto rails before the driver in the car drove the car in the tunnel. The Tesla was later on lifted on the other side of the tunnel through another elevator. The vehicle rose up and came out into the sunlight in a background which seemed to be like a building’s backyard. From the footage, one can see that the tunnel is lit-up with a neon tube which runs overhead and provides an icy blue-green hue.
During his speech at the opening, Musk said that the fastest speed at which the company was able to send a car via the passage till now was around 110 miles per hour. However, he said that this speed was a bit scary but for all those people who would be travelling through the tunnel will have to maintain a speed limit of about 40-50 miles per hour.
The tunnel runs for a little more than a mile from the suburban headquarters of SpaceX in LA. The passage has been built as a test version to carry out other main tunneling projects in future in various other cities. Musk visualizes that other cities would develop such underground portals in future which will let motorists to travel from one point to other by spending less time on streets. The cost for the underground travel of each passenger could be around $1, he added.
Moreover, he explained the reports at the tunnel opening that these tunnels can be a solution to alleviate urban traffic congestion drastically. Musk hopes that the underground portals will cause a dramatic shift in urban transportation.
