Deryck Whibley Faces Another Health Crisis
A shocking announcement came from the family of Sum 41’s lead, Deryck Whibley, revealing that the 43-year-old musician is currently battling pneumonia, leading to hospitalization. The news was shared by his wife, Ariana Cooper Whibley, on Instagram. Alongside an emotional picture of the Toronto-native being escorted to an ambulance, Ariana wrote, “We spent the entire night in the ER and will now be spending the next few days here in the hospital as he fights through pneumonia.”
However, the worry doesn’t just end with pneumonia. Ariana shared her concerns about the strain on Deryck’s heart, highlighting the grave possibility of heart failure. The couple, who share two young children, Lydon Idby and Quentin Arlo, are going through a particularly trying time given their previous battles.
A Glimpse into Whibley’s Past Health Struggles
Whibley isn’t unfamiliar with health crises. In 2014, he collapsed in his kitchen, resulting in an urgent hospital visit where doctors disclosed his liver and kidneys had failed. Post this alarming episode, both Whibley and Ariana, grappling with her own mental health issues, committed to sobriety. Reflecting on that dark time, Whibley once confided in PEOPLE, saying, “We said, ‘We’re going to take our lives seriously at this point and figure this s— out.'”
Opening up about his sobriety journey, Whibley later told Vice, “Now I’m feeling better than I’ve ever felt. I’m healthier. I’m in the best shape of my life.” The duo sealed their bond in a Los Angeles wedding in August 2015.
Sum 41’s Journey Comes to a Pause
Amidst the health scare, it’s essential to touch upon the recent developments related to Sum 41, the band Whibley has been synonymous with since 1996. Earlier this year, the members announced their decision to part ways post the release of their latest album, “Heaven and Hell”, and wrapping up their global tour. Their heartfelt statement expressed gratitude to their longtime fans, emphasizing the indescribable love they harbor for their supportive audience.
Despite the split, the band’s passion remains undeterred. They concluded their U.S. tour with iconic bands The Offspring and Simple Plan and are gearing up for a performance at “When We Were Young 2023” in Las Vegas.
The current health scare serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of life. The Whibley family’s request for good wishes is a call for everyone to rally around one of rock’s most iconic figures during this challenging time.
