Warriors star Andrew Wiggins hasn’t played a single NBA game since February 2023. The Canadian basketball player’s last game was against Washington Wizards, where the Warriors scored 135-126 beating the Wizards.
What’s the reason behind Andrew Wiggins’ absence?
Andrew Wiggins’ absence has stretched across a significant 15 games, prompting questions and speculation among fans and pundits.
In March 2023, Warriors general manager Bob Myers stated that Wiggins’ absence won’t be long and he will return soon. While speaking to the 95.7 The Game’s Steiny & Guru, Myers said,
“I don’t think that’s what anybody is planning for,” Myers said. “But we’ll leave that in its own place. That’s not the expectation. I think what you’re asking is – could he remain out for a long, long time? I don’t think that’s happening.”
He also added that once Wiggins is back, he will address the reason behind his absence from the game himself.
“I’m going to leave that alone. Hopefully, when he gets back, whatever words he would like to say on it, which I don’t think will be much – it’s his private life, he will do.”
On the other hand, Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr revealed that Andrew Wiggins was dealing with something important off the court, which is why he missed the remainder of the season. While respecting Wiggins’ privacy, Kerr was able to shed some light on the matter.
He confirmed that Wiggins has been dealing with a personal family issue, which has kept him off the court since mid-February. The details, understandably, have been kept under wraps.
“There’s nothing to report. So, we’re giving him the space as we talked about, as he deals with something that’s way more important than the game. And if he’s able to come back, then that would be great. And if not, then that’s the case. And whatever happens, we handle it accordingly.”
Considering his significant contribution to it, Andrew Wiggins’ absence has undoubtedly been a matter of concern for the team.
Before his break, Wiggins had an average of 17.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.2 steals per game while also shooting 47.3%.
Additionally, he had a 39.6% shooting rate from beyond the arc. The Warriors (36-33) are 17-15 without Wiggins showcasing his integral role within the team.
Teammate Steph Curry also offered his support to Andrew Wiggins while speaking at a press conference. Curry mentioned that Wiggins is dealing with a family situation and that it is necessary for him to prioritise his personal life over his professional.
“It’s a tough situation in terms of him being away for so long, but necessary. Life is bigger than basketball. Whatever him and his family are going through, that’s all that matters. Whenever he’s ready to come back, I’m sure he will.”
